Question type: Maintenance & Repair

incremental mechanical rotary encoder (volume on/off) Here's what I know... Desoldered 5 pin  + 2 anchor pin encoder component from board. Back of component - ALPS JAPAN - stamped. Board has VR401 at location. The 2 pin side mometary on/off. 3 pin side middle pin is a +grd. Leaves you the up/down vol. function.
Where can I buy just one w/a reasonable shipping chg? China has one for $1.90 + $234 shipping:(?

China already gets enough of our $$$$,just go to your local salvage yards get a radio out of one.

I have the same problem with the radio in my 1997 Honda Civic Ex. On/Off button works, but volume control does not work. It's been a few years since your initial post, but were you able to resolve the problem with your radio? If you got the replacement encoder, what was the ALPS part number?

Yea Micheal. I did find a "generic" replacement part 10 pak from China but stem was too long. Unfortunetly I ended up with volume working ok but could not turn the damn thing off except with ignition switch or turn it down. I'm not an electronics expert...that one one contact on circuit board had delamenated when soldering. 98 Civic I don't have anymore. My suggestion Micheal is...install a new aftermarket radio. I'm sure there's one available that'll fit perfectly in a 97 Civic. Les D.

Thanks Les. I'll probably find a new keyless entry and security system along with the aftermarket radio so I won't have to hide existing unit beneath new radio. I've burned up at least one other circuit board before while trying to re-solder components, so I'm wary about repeating that with my CIvic radio. Thanks again.
