Started turning over . . . something broke . . .now strange sound, won't turn over

Sorry there isn't much info to base an answer on, it would need to be inspected - if you heard the noise while it was cranking, you might have lost the starter or starter solenoid. That's an easy repair job and shouldn't cost too much.
