2009 Hyundai Elantra.

Yesterday my break light and check engine both
showed up on the dash. I fixed the issue with the
break but my engine light is still on. I don't know
anything about cars and I'm really concerned.

you would have to get the check engine code first, in certain areas auto parts store (like autozone) will do it for free.
