When I start my car sometimes it won't even turn over unless i take it out of park first and then put it back in park. What could cause this?

Yes replace it. It is so your car will only start in P and N. some are easy and some not. It is generally one or two nuts, unhooking the gear shift cable and making sure you get it back in the same spot so the shift indicator is correct. They are expensive so see if yours can be taken apart and cleaned? There are several YouTube videos on this. It takes someone mechanical or someone with electronics experience to fix these. I had problems with a rusted bolt on the transaxle getting mine off.
