Engine stalling at low speed and at stop signal
Asked by Robyn_pondering Apr 27, 2020 at 07:02 AM about the 2002 Hyundai Elantra GLS Sedan FWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
The car has been driving perfectly and then all of a sudden
I'm sitting in McDonald's drive-thru in drive but with the
brake on so the car just idling at less than a thousand
RPMs and it just shut off and I put it in drive and it cranks
right back up no hesitation and cranking up but it why is it
stalling

It could be many things. Is the Check engine light on? If so, there are fault codes stored in the system you can recover using an OBDii code scanner. an auto part store can do this for free or you can purchase one or borrow one.
This answer is a bit late but I thought I would post this for others looking for answers. I just went through all of this with my 2017 Elantra.... My aftermarket oil filter was too restrictive so it was causing the oil pressure to drop at random. Of course this was figured out after I replaced the timing chain, oil pump, and crankshaft position sensor. It sounds crazy but this is what worked for me, try out the official Hyundai oil filter. Right before it would stall the oil light, battery light, and check engine light would come one. Car would easily restart after I put it in park and cranked it. Upon restart all lights would go away. Shop could pull no codes. My car would stall at stops, at slow turns, on bumpy roads going slow. It was unbelievably hard to figure out.
I have this same issue now with 43000 miles on my 2017 Hyundai Elantra.. Similar to what Cheyenne mentions about the oil, brake and engine light displaying including the bumpy road which leads to my house. It stalls but also has some rattling type of noise from the engine/transmission area. It always restarts at least so far. It never does it on the way to work in the morning which is pretty much on the expressway. Only when I get home and have to drive around a while in stop and go traffic looking for a parking spot. I got an appointment with my mechanic next week and I filled him in on the issue. I'm also due for an oil change. Hopefully it is something as simple as that. Someone mentioned a similar thing on another thread.

Similar issue here with a 2017 Hyundai Elantra. Drove 40 minutes up and down hills. It was seemingly OK until we pulled into a parking lot and it stalled. Occasional rattle noises at low RPM's, but that will go away. No codes found at the shop.
Exact same issue as everyone above only happens going slow or bumpy/ turns and a ticking sound start occurring under the hood please help if anyone actually figure out the issue!
@bailey i had the same issue but I had an oil change and it doesn’t stall anymore this was 2 weeks ago the other weird stuff on my car hasn’t fixed tho
