Can I replace a 2.5 liter engine with a 2.3 liter engine?

Can I replace my 2000 Ford Ranger 2.5 liter engine with a 2009 2.3 liter ford Ranger engine?  Will it fit?  Both vehicles are from 4X2 automatic pickups.

You'll probably have a hell of a time matching the new to old so it's usually best to go with what the vehicle was designed for .
