Car uses gas very fast
Asked by Guru9QB8P Jul 08, 2017 at 04:51 PM about the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu LT FWD
Question type: General
I bought my 2017 Chevy Malibu this May and it seems to burn through gas
pretty quickly. My commute is only 45 miles, when I start my trip on a full tank
by the time I get there the needle has already moved to 7/8. It seems that the
car uses more gas than it should because I average 45 mpg. Anyone have the
saem issues or does the car still need to be broken in?

Jim, I totally hear you and couldn't agree more. I've even tried several times to let the car get as close to empty as possible without getting myself stranded somewhere then fill the car again and I never purchase more than 10 gal! Every single time it is never more than 10gal of gas needed. If the gas tank capacity is 13-15 gal then how is this possible? It is completely nerve wracking and I am very close to selling this car because I am so dissatisfied.
I have the same thing. It seemed to need gas more than the calcs would suggest. When I make trip OD zero at a fill up, then next fill up, divide total gallons by the miles driven since last one, I'm only getting about 21 mpg where the computer is saying - on that same OD that I'm getting well over 30 mpg . So something is very wrong.
This is happening to me as well. I just filled up the tank my work commute is only 30miles 5 days a week and it’s already at almost half tank now. It is very frustrating because I live in California where gas prices is extremely high. Every 3 day I am filling up the tank trying to trade this car in I’ve only had it for a year very disappointed
Same problem here. I go from one line almost to the next letting it warm up. I've only had it a month and I'm bummed out that I didn't catch it faster, so I wouldn't have to pay a deductible just to have it looked at. It was free to have it fixed within the first 30 days at the car lot I got it from.
Gabriella what’d year is your Malibu ?
Just replace head gaskets manifold gasket thermostat lifters and I'm only getting 10 to 11 miles a gallon why is that on a 2000 Chevy Malibu
Here is some helpful info. I too was getting short gas mileage. I noticed when filling up and the pump stops indicating full I would continue slowly with pumping more gas. Now this make take a few minutes being the pump will stop indicating full, not so. I continue to fill the tank slowly stopping a few minutes. I was able to get an additional 4 gallons in my tank doing this method. Normally, when I fill up it says I have 360 miles to empty. By doing what I listed I was able to get 470 miles. Trust me it works.
@marsh2472 how long does the gas last that way?
Right now my Malibu is averaging 13mpg in the city. I live 10 miles closer to work and I'm spending twice the money in has. I didn't have this problem before and wondering if it's a vehicle issue. I can't even get 24 on the highway and use to average 36
I just got a used 17 Malibu LT and noticed the same thing! My commute is roughly 20-25 miles a day, all city driving. I filled up Monday morning and after my Tuesday morning commute to work, it was down to 3/4 of a tank. I feel a bit gypped because I kept seeing online and was told at the dealership, "This car has GREAT mileage!" but now that I have it, I'm not so sure any more. I'm sure it's better tend most, but I think my '05 Ford Focus a better gas tank then this car. It's a shame because it's such a beautiful car and you can tell that Chevy spared no expense...except on the gas tank.
Gabriella, I know this is from a while ago. If your car doesn't fill up more than 10 gallons on an empty tank and it is suppose to be a 13-15 gallon like most Malibu's, it is more than likely the O2 sensor. After a while of the sensor getting worse it becomes harder and harder to fill the tank all the way. I had a Ford mustang where the O2 sensor took about 2 weeks from almost filling it all the way to not being able to put more than 10 cents in it without the gas pump shutting off on me. My 2010 ltz malibus o2 sensor was still letting me fill it at least 3/4 of the way after two months before I replaced it. So some go completely bad really fast and some take a while to get to the bad point even though my Malibu I didn't let it get to that point. But the bad o2 sensor will suck your gas mileage down fast too.
