humming noise

Asked by diken1957 Oct 05, 2018 at 09:50 AM about the 2017 Subaru Legacy 2.5i AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

my 2017 Subaru legacy makes a low intermittent humming noise (about 2 seconds in length, then a pause for a second, then keeps repeating like this) most noticeable (and annoying) over 55 mph--when I turn right on a curve in the road the humming gets faster, and when I take a left curve the hum goes away until the wheels are straight again, then it returns
I get the impression also under my foot on the floorboard that there is also a slight vibration during the hum

You may have a bad CV joint, you might be able to see for yourself turn the steering wheel all the way to the right look at the right wheel from the front look for a rubber boot close to the wheel do the same for the left, if you see a broken boot or a bunch of grease on the back of the tire. That would be the bad one. Although I recommend replacing both axles because they both turned the same number of times.

Another candidate for causing the hum, in addition to the CV joint, are the tires themselves. When you turn you change the camber, which could affect the hum. Tires that are going bad can hum or vibrate at a specific speed, usually around 50MPH. (Google "tire vibration at a certain speed"). Take the car to a shop, have the tires balanced and let them check condition of CV axles.
