To All out there with SERVICE SHIFTER . I had this problem come up at 19,000 miles while driving I pulled over in a safe place killed the engine after very concerned called the deal they told me they never heard of that , I was advised to restart the engine., when I did it no longer appeared untill 1200 miles later . I respected the process after calling in, I took the vehicle in for service they replaced the shifter and a wiring harness after that my engine would start running over 200 degrees at times it would reach 220 i took the jeep back in 3 more times after 2 thermostat change out 1 air bleed from the engine and still at various times overheating would come the last time it reached 231 degrees I talked to the dealership again they told me as long as the engine had no check engine light I was in specs, I was tired of smelling hints of antifreeze and feeling a light miss in the engine, I finally was worried enough I traded it off but NOT for anthother Jeep Cherokee my dealership was in New Boston Texas, Good Luck Y'all. ( I'm Happy Now in a Honda ) I hate that good folks out there are not being treated right with this problem. I will never buy a New Jeep again!!!!!!!!
Having same issue with 2018 Jeep 14,900 miles.
That warning just came on when I pulled up to the house. 2018 12000 miles. Have had it for not even 13 months.
I’m having the same issue with my 2016 Jeep Cherokee. I was reading we can submit a complaint to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to have an investigation opened and if they receive enough complaints they will look into it and hopefully open a recall. I just submitted one for my Jeep. Here’s the link https://www- odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/
I have a 2017 Jeep Cherokee and I’m at 23,724 miles and this just happened to me. I’m literally sitting in a parking lot googling it and came upon this. I’ve turned my car off and back on and everything seems to be back to normal. My dealership is closed so I can’t get any answers. I will call tomorrow.

I had this happen Friday I have a 2017 pulled over called dealership and they said they never heard of it. 26,000 miles told me to bring it in after reading this something needs to get done. How can Jeep service not know. Its programmed into jeep
At owning mine for about 16 months, I had this happen on my 2017 Jeep Cherokee. when I took it to the dealer they said it's no issue, it just needs an update. They did the update and now about 6-8 months later, same thing is happening. This needs to be fixed. If it's due to updates it's ridiculous that I'll now have to take my Jeep in every 6 months. It should operate on the system installed. Will not own another Jeep. NEVER AGAIN. I also have friends that have the same and theirs have randomly shut off while driving, two separate jeeps.
Just found this page because this same thing just happened to me! 2017 jeep Cherokee with 57777 miles. All of a sudden "service shifter" with the shifter lights all illuminated red. I've had NOTHING but problems with this thing since I bought it. The transmission is spanked. I'm part of a class action law suit for it. But this is just something else that has gone wrong. Havent even owned it for a whole year. Smfh.
I have a 2018 Jeep Cherokee with 31,000 miles. I had the Service Shifter Message come up on my screen 3 days ago. It would only pop up on my commute home from work. It would highlight all my gear lights red and the screen was locked to Service Shifter. I took it to the dealership and this morning they informed me that the wires in the gearshift and a plastic piece have to be replaced. It was covered by warranty.

Just happened to me tonight. 2026 Jeep, 41,000 miles. I turned it off, then on, it reset. I love my Jeep, other than the sunroof rattling, I have no other complaints.
Update from 7 days ago....I called my dealership last Monday after this happened last Sunday. My service guy said he replaced the shifter and the wiring harness on 5 Jeeps last November but mine was the first he had heard of this year. He said it could be serious and leave you stranded and unable to put the vehicle in park. I took my vehicle in Monday after work and it was ready a few days later. I haven’t had any more issues since. If your vehicle is under warranty and you have had this issue, I highly recommend taking it in and having them replace those two things.
Multiple times at the dealership with warranty issues this is a joke when they can’t fix it it’s continuous aggravation and neglect especially when the owner tells me to drive it until it blows up, I can’t jeopardize my family , someone else or myself in that kind of thinking,NeverEver will I spend hard earned money on a Jeep is product again.Be Careful Y’all.
I am currently having the same service shifter message in my 2016 jeep Cherokee..has anyone had any luck getting it fixed and it NOT coming back ?
This just happened to me. 2016 Jeep Cherokee with 29,550 miles. Drove home and sat in the garage looking through the Owner's Manuel ... nothing! Went to my computer in the house and found this page. Car's still under warranty. I guess the story will continue when I see the dealer on Monday. Argh!
I have a 2014 Cherokee with 70k miles. I was at the car wash and when I shifted into neutral the “Service Shift” light came on. Then about a week later, the same thing happened - at the car wash! A few days after that, my engine light came on. A few months ago, some weird thing happened where the dash kept saying “Key in Ignition” and the key wasn’t. The damn thing wouldn’t start. I replaced the battery in the fob, no luck. Finally, I disconnected the battery cable to reset the computer and then it started. But guess what came on : ENGINE LIGHT!! I love my Jeep but I am so fed up with all these little quirks going on. I’m glad I’m not the only one experiencing issues. I’m ready to trade it in, but the trade in value is very low.
I Bought my 2016 Jeep Cherokee in October of 2016, i had 11,000 miles on when i bought, The service shifter came on before my first oil change was due.. Had the dealership look at when i took it in for the oil change. Came on again within a month. This is a regular occurrence, at least monthly if not more often. If i pull over and turn the car off and back on, that will usually reset it.. for anywhere from minutes to weeks, I've had independent garages look into with no luck. It is annoying. When i'm on the highway i get really annoyed that it locks up my display and i cant' see my speedometer.. who ever figures this problem out will be my hero for all time, because i really love my Jeep, except for this.

Hoping mine is the first to get fixed for good....LOL. 2017 Cherokee with 15,500. This started about 2 months ago with periodic messages of "Service shifter". It went away for about 6 weeks and just came back this morning. Made an appt for May 9th.....I guess we will see.
2016 Jeep Cherokee Loving the light show in my car! - Service Airbag - Service Shifter - Check Engine What a performance, sunning, captivating, what else could possibly break next?! BRAVO
Mine came on for the first time today. I have a 2015 with 80,000 miles. I turned it off and back on and it didn’t come back on. I bought the extended warranty so I will be sure to take it in. Does anyone else have issues with a hard jerk when you are accelerating? Mine does it sometimes and it also delays when the emissions mode is on and the engine shuts down at a stop light. As soon as I hit the gas it delays then jerks into gear. I hate that so much that I turn that off every time I start the Jeep now. This is my first Jeep and probably my last because I’m tired of all the computer reset issues. So disappointing
2017 Jeep Cherokee latitude...28000 miles. First came on in Jan 19 when weather was below freezing. Left it to cold weather. Didn't get again for 2 months. Restart cleared it every time. Have been having it sporatically since. "Knock on wood" it hasn't happened while driving. Take it to the dealer today. Going to make the complaint for recall.
Make a complaint to the NTSB. You can google NTSB Complaint and it'll take you to the site as the links above don't work (you'll need your VIN). This is unacceptable in my newish 2018 Cherokee. All they're doing when you take the car in is reset the computer which is no better than pulling over and turning your car off and on.
Having this same issue on my 2018 Cherokee (10000) miles. I have taken it in twice for the issue already and they did nothing but update software. Took it to a dealer today where they are running diagnostics. If they don’t replace the shifter and wire harness I will advise them to do so.
I had the same "Service Shifter" problem happen to me this morning. 2017 Cherokee Limited with 30445 miles. I have an appt with the dealership in 2 days for them to look at it. Jeep was driving fine when the lights and notification came on. This is why I leased the Jeep to see if I wanted to go back to driving one - probably not. Good thing I get to give it back!
Same for me 2017 Jeep. Took it in an dthey replaced fuse no big problem right? Wrong now it’s doing it again. Frustrating. Jeep is two years old
Happened to me tonight on my way home doing 75mph on the interstate in the pouring rain! Scared me to death I have no idea what was going on couldn’t change the dash to anything else. 2017 Jeep Cherokee latitude with 12,500 miles purchased in February 2019 (one owner before me with No complaints) Calling the dealership in the morning !
For those that have had this happen, what did you do or the dealership do to fix it? We just had this issue with our 2016 Jeep.
Mine is doing this too. But just fyi. The jerking whileshifting has had a recall on it so get that fixed. I took my 2017 in for not starting with 40,000 miles on it and they mentioned the recall for the jerking. They couldnt figure out for 2 days why my car wouldnt start. They finally decided I needed a new battery. My car is fine now but I really dont think the battery was the issue.
2017 Jeep Cherokee now has 40,000 miles on it. I had this issue last year and today it's back. I'm pissed. Just got car back from dealer last week fir a leaking rear valve seal. I love driving this car but really disappointed mechanically. The transmission constantly jerks despite constant updates, when I put the car in park it ocassionally rolls forward even if I'm on a flat surface and while it might sound silly, mad that the light fir the headlight icon already blew out...the car is 2 yrs old. And the best, the dealer is insisting there is no icon, they even compared it to another Jeep. When I go back for shifter, I will show the. their own manual & point out yet again what idiots they are.
Having same issue 2018 20k miles
I have a 2018 Cherokee Latitude. 23,000 miles and mine just did that about an hour ago. Also, when it’s cold outside, mine does not want to come out of park. I have honestly sat in the driveway for up to 10 minutes trying to shift mine into gear. WISH I HAD NEVER BOUGHT IT!!!!
Same issue with “Service Shifter” message & all red lights on shifter tree while on the freeway no less! Approx 31k on 2017 Jeep AWD Lattitude. Seems to have 70 mph governor also with this issue. Reset after off!

2015 Cherokee with 64k. Service Shifter came on last year, went in to have it fixed under warranty. Asked what caused it, they had no idea. Then the airbag indicator came on with the check engine. Needed to pay two deductibles for a new seatbelt and thermostat. Service Shifter back on, and I'm sure they'll demand another deductible again, though it is a repeat issue. I love my Jeep, but given the issues if I could trade it without paying for the remaining amount left on it, I would.
So, 2015 Grand Cherokee. Service shifter came on once last week, restared engine, went away, thought it was nothing. Then 4 days ago, it came back with the same symptoms everyone has already mentioned, all drives lighting up on dashboards, etc. Took it to the service center. Fault was that the Power Steering pump had a leak that created a fuse in its control unit that stopped sending signals to the shifter. So it doesnt know what to do. Replaced the power steering pump as well as the AC condenser because the leakage also went through its grills. Had it for 2 days now after fix, with no issue. Hope this is the real issue. Will keep you guys posted
I am just sick at heart, I bought this used Jeep Cherokee 2016, 32,000 miles on it. Beautiful. Now that 36,000 miles is on it, the warranty wont' cover the cost of repairs for the "service shifter" I am 69 yrs. I have driven all kinds of cars, in all kinds of conditions. But never has a car needed a "shifter serviced" 3 yrs. out of the gate. What of this world coming to?? Jeep I was so happy to have American. I wonder how many KIA or HONDAs have shifter problems.
This service shifter light with the gear shift PNRD light in all red, started today at 7:00pm.2016 JeepCherokee latitude with a engine 3.2l V6 . It has 20500 miles on it, and warranty expires June 30,2019...Deale closed til Monday. Any suggestions
I purchased a brand new 2018 jeep cherokee lattitude 4x4 and the same thing is happening at just 14000 miles. I recently had to have the shifter looked and now THIS.. There should already be a recall. I'm very DISAPPOINTED to say the least to read about so many having the same issues and nothing being done. Then when it Is worked on another issue arises.. what a crock and a rip off.
So after posting this issue 2 weeks ago, they are going to have to replace the shifter assembly for the 2nd time less than a year after the first incident. My car is 2 yrs old. I'm being told that now my extended warranty has kicked in and there is a deductible. I refuse to believe I should be out of pocket anything for a part that has now failed twice in my vehicle. I was so excited to own this car and I do love driving it, but I'm sick of it already.
2017 jeep Cherokee here. Bought new. Around a month ago the service shifter light first came on. Vehicle runs fine with it on. Turned it off and back on and it went away for a few weeks. Then it would start to come on once a week. Now every day. Cant drive 20 miles without it coming on. Vehicle runs and drives fine with it on but it is very annoying. I have a rather lengthy commute to work. Light first came on at 48k miles. Warranty is up. Now have 58k miles on it.

Just had my mom’s 2018 Jeep Cherokee oil changed at the dealer yesterday and today “Service Shifter” Any advice? Legal action links?
I have a 2016 Jeep Cherokee - I bought it used at 20k miles. The service shifter light started turning on at intervals two months after I bought it. The lights and message goes off when I shut off the car and don't come on when restarted. The message comes on at random intervals - sometimes every day for a week, sometimes not for 2 months. Since this has been going on for over 2 years and it goes away each time I shut off my car, and after reading the blogs each year, I am assuming that it's a glitch and no one really knows if anything is wrong. My car has been great and this is the only problem I have run into. It sure scares you when it comes on though, as you are flying down the highway!

i filed a complaint with the web site Here’s the link https://www- odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/ my service shifter came on my dash of my 2014 jeep cherokee sport and i only have 63714 miles on my car i had it 3 years now and i had no warning i went into a store came back out and my car wouldn't start i had to get a jump start just to get it home , the next morning i took it into the dealership and they guy said he's never heard of something like that happening , one of the ladies that works there said it happened to her 2018 jeep cherokee , this really needs to be investigated or someone is going to end up getting hurt over it . i'm hoping filing a complaint that they look into more .
Same thing is happening with my 2017 Jeep Cherokee. Started around 39,000. I put it in park and turned it off the first time. It corrected itself. However, just happened again only 3 days later at 39,159. Looked it up and see it's obviously an issue! Not very happy as it is happening again and at low miles. Wtf Jeep!? Taking it in right now. We'll see what they say!
Had the same issue today... but this is a brand new 2019 I only have 2642 miles on this baby... but it's been giving me issues left and right since I got it in feburary... Like 2 weeks in.... I'm beginning to think I need to take it back...

2017 Jeep Cherokee....with service shifter notice and got told it’s not covered under warranty ? What the F@ck ?
I'm currently at the dealership and they informed me they have seen in the issue before and it has to do with the wiring. Initially said it would be $130 just to look at it, then said they would knock $20 off. When he entered it into their system he entered $100, to help me out. Which is nice, but makes me think they are just making up the fee to look at an issue. I'll let everyone know what they tell me.
Said it was the bezel and the wiring into the shifter. Apparently there is a sensor in there and breaks down and eventually fails, which means you may not be able to shift. It was $100 to diagnose the problem, and they said it would $322 to fix it. Should take 3-5 days to get the parts in. I'm going to shop this around as that seems a bit high to me.

2017 Cherokee 'Service Shifter Soon' light came on 3x in a 2 week period, roughly 45k and in service since February 2018. I took it to the dealer and they replaced the shifter bezel and harness per TSB 08-054-18. I have requested reimbursement for the repair and loaner car charges. This failure is only covered if under base warranty or extended contract if purchased. Disappointed that the powertrain warranty doesn't cover it. Sadly, my selling dealer are typically salespeople and sold me an aftermarket contract that is only good at their dealership. They failed to mention that to me at time of purchase.
Just got my vehicle back from the dealership service centre to have the "Service Shifter" issued fixed. Purchased a slightly used 2018 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk with 16,000 kms on it. Had it for about 8 months before getting the "service shifter" message when starting vehicle. I immediately called the dealer to ensure it wasn't a safety hazard to continue driving. They advised me there was no safety hazard but that there was a factory recall and i could bring the vehicle in to be diagnosed and repaired, free of charge. They ended up having to replace the shifter wiring harness. They had to order the parts in, which took about a week, and about 3hrs for the repair, no cost to me and i was able to keep my vehicle while waiting for the parts to come in. I'm disappointed that a vehicle with less than 25K kms and only 18 months old
same issue - filed a complaint here: https://www- odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/thankyou
I took my 2017 jeep Cherokee latitude to the dealer ship 2 weeks ago because all the lights on the shifter were lighten up ( and reading service shifter) come to find out I needed to get the shifter replaced and wiring harness... Thankfully it was under warranty... Last week took the jeep back in because the heat was blowing cold and wasn't syncing.... Yesterday I came home on break for work and everything was fine til... I got in my jeep to drive back to work and it wouldn't start, it wouldn't crank the transmission light on and battery and oil light keeps switching... .. I had to have it towed to the dealer ship today...they said it was a shortage in the battery so they replaced the battery... My truck isn't even two years old... I never had any issues with my jeep til the shifter and wiring harness was replaced....
Had my 2015 Cherokee repaired (shifter & harness) for this in mid-2017 and the message did not reappear until a couple months ago (~ May 2019). Seems to pop on when I shift into reverse. New appointment set to address again.
So does anyone seem to recall your Jeep being on an incline, and having a hard shift into reverse before this problem started? Like a clunk, or hard to shift into reverse? It happened to me recently, and ever since, now the notice comes up on the HUD again! I had my 2017 warrantied at the dealership at 33,704. (**dealership notes**, TRACED TO SHIFTER ASSEM. INTERNAL FAULT, REPLACED SHIFTER ASSEM., VERIFIED REPAIR) Yes, you read that right, REPLACED, as in new. And now it came on again recently. Called back, was told this part isn't covered after my original 36,000 warranty. $600 plus labor to repair. Just filed my complaint online. Reading here, this is an ongoing issue for a few years now. Come on FCA, do the right thing. You have a defective product here. You are telling me your gear shifter is only good for 25,000 miles? Fix it!!!
same problem, I have a 2017 Jeep Cherokee, service shifter came on a few months ago, called dealer who had not heard of it. Went in for service, they said it needed a programming update. It's been ok since, but now twice this week it has come on and done it again.
Is the service shifter under warranty, seems like lots of customers are having the same problem, we have a 2016 jeep, that the service shifter light has come on.
I have a 2014 Jeep Cherokee, Not even 35000 miles, just had a recall about the shifter - on the same day I went to the dealer the Service Shifter message popped up. Dealership thought that this would solve the problem. Nope, message comes on all the time now. Went to the dealer today, they reset the message, I started the car and message was on again! To replace the shifter they charge $ 765 without tax. Not under warranty, so frustrating. Had issues with this car since day 1.
I have had this happen to my car twice in the last month (~August 2019), 2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude with under 25,000 miles.

2015 Cherokee - had this problem last year before the warranty expired. Three trips to the local dealer and they couldn't get it fixed. Finally took it to dealer in a nearby town and they replaced the shifter and wiring harness. All was well until yesterday and the message came back. Took it to the local dealer so they could see it and they scheduled an appointment for today. Of course, everything is normal now after shutting it off. We are also out of factory warranty and on the extended warranty with a $100 deductible now.
Just adding another identical story here for the record. My 2017 GC Trailhawk went absolutely haywire while driving 65MPH on mountain roads in Colorado in the middle of the night, in the middle of nowhere. Every imaginable warning light/message came on and the shifter lights all started flashing with the 'service shifter' message. Vehicle was stuck in one gear and would not shift up or down, either automatically or manually. At one point when I pulled over to restart the vehicle it simply would not start. Sat there for 30 minutes and called a tow truck but then it started up again. The problem was still there (stuck in one gear with all of the warning lights) but I was able to drive to a nearby town to park it for the night. Next morning I was able to start it and drive it in 1st gear to a dealer where it sits. After reading all of the above anecdotes I believe something is seriously defective in these vehicles so I filed a safety complaint at the NHTSA link listed in several of the posts.
My suggestion to all, if you are under the 2 yr & 24,000 mile mark, ask them to do a buy back. I have filed a complaint with NHTSA and also with Chrysler Jeep. After speaking with the caseworker at Chrysler Jeep because this is happening for the 3rd time, I was told the only way they would have offered a buy back was if I was under the 2 yr mark. Of course the 2nd time this happened was a few months after the 2 yr mark and now 2 months after that. It's outrageous that it was expected for me to know that this would be a chronic problem with my car and not a one time fix. Now waiting for them to yet again, schedule me to get the part replaced. Absolutely unreal the way they are treating their customers
Guys, i am out in South Africa, my 2015 Jeep Overland lit up like a Christmas tree with 9 different error messages. The first and persistent one was the "Service Shifter" warning, followed by "service throttle, service transmission, do not switch off the engine until you get to your destination, park disabled...". This started while i was 6hrs away from home on the road with my wife and kids...had to limp back to Johannesburg which was atleast 550km away.
Update: the Jeep dealer diagnosed my problem as a faulty TIPM. It's basically the fuse box housing and it's separating. So that definitely explains the myriad warnings and everything going haywire. The very box that holds all of the fuses in place is separating. Looking elsewhere online, this is a chronic problem with Chrysler vehicles. Cost to repair is ~US$700. Fingers crossed that actually fixes it.
How is there not a recall??? I show an article from 2014-2015 and the others should be as well. https://www.cnbc.com/2016/04/22/fiat-chrysler-recalls-11m-suvs-cars-worldwide-for- safety-issue.html This is ridiculous to make 3 payments on 2018 used Jeep Cherokee and have such a service issues. They better service without me paying but I doubt it. I had to talk to a receptionist on phone and not an actual service repair person who could help me with understanding issue and the only thing she did was make an appointment. I didn't like that at all. Great, I will be bleeding money with this car and going into debit. Just stupid!
OlindoLindy answered 5 years ago
How is there not a recall on this???? Just took my 2017 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk in to service dept. Same issues so I won't repeat myself. "service shifter" lights up and the gear shifter panel lights up! $ dollars to fix an obvious manufacturing issue! I requested that they keep all the parts for me. Thanks for the response above- I will file a complaint with same issue - filed a complaint here: https://www- odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/thankyou
I'm surprised to hear that people are having to pay for this repair. I posted here a couple months ago when experiencing this problem on my 2018 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk and my Jeep dealership told me that there is a factory recall for this issue. I did not have to pay a single penny for this repair and you shouldn't either! I have not had the issue reoccur since the repairs.
Since your car is a 2018 model, I assume It's under warranty.
It's interesting. I'm on my 3rd repair of this issue (see previous posts). This time I went to different dealer. I also opened a case with Chrysler/Jeep and let them know I filed a complaint with the NTSB. They have to replace the wiring assembly again for the shifter. The mechanic told me there is a service notice out for the warning code that pops up so they know what to fix. Even he seems baffled by the fact that even after making repairs the parts are still failing. Jeep really did nothing for me other than make sure I did not have to pay for the rental (previously I paid $5/day because I am still under my extended warranty). This dealership did not ask me for the $100 deductible which I refused to pay at the other dealer. I don't know if that had to do with the part being less than 2 months old when it failed or if Jeep had some say in it. Either way, I am stuck with this car for a long time to come. I can only hope that I'm not back in the shop again for the same issue. As a side note, the rental I got was a Jeep Renegade...felt like a flimsy nothing of a car...hate it.
Wendy, that is just terrible service/expectation from Jeep dealers. I have seen so many on the road lately as well and if they keep this up, no one will be buying Jeeps period! I just got mine and hardly made payments and already want to be rid of it. I shouldn't feel that way when making such a big purchase and really just makes me sick! ugh.
I have a 2018 Jeep Cherokee with 21K miles on it and it has flashed "shift into park or neutral" while driving and the accelerator stops working. Luckily it was on non busy roads (all times) so I just shut it off and turned it back on. It rumbled for a bit while turning it on but eventually did after every time. After this happened twice, I brought it in they put a new wiring harness on it. Two days later it happened again. We brought it back in to the same place and they said it was because the oil level was low, which I think they said because they have no clue whats causing it. Every time we have brought it in, its been free but I think we will probably sell it.
Are there enough complaints yet for a recall for service shifter lights coming on? I have a 2016 Cherokee North that the lights keep coming on.
My Cherokee Trailhawk is a 2014, but I replaced the transmission in Jan 2019 - The Service Shifter light came on last night and the red lights next to the shift all came on. I shut it off , waited and restarted and had the same problem...
I should have researched Jeep before buying one. Service shifter light came on today so I pulled over and called dealership. Service Dept told me it was OK to drive and set an appointment for next week. Started Jeep back up and light was out. Just waiting for it to come back on again. I was driving in town at 30 mph when it came on. Level ground no strain on tranny. Good thing I purchased the extended warranty when I got it because otherwise I wouldn't have the money to fix it.
I have a 2017 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk and just had the sevice shifter light come on yesterday while driving. It did not change the way the car felt when driving, but all the light on shifter turned red and screen showed service shifter . Once I got home and turned it off, I restarted it and it went away but now I have the check engine light on My jeep has 24,500km on it and I have had it for 2 weeks. Very unhappy! I love the Jeep but traded two 'beaters' that I was constantly fixing for a new vehicle that apparently I will now have to fix
So far replacing the TIPM has fixed the problem for me. For those of you having the issues in this thread, check your fuses. If they all seem loose and can be pushed in, your TIPM is likely separating and this is a chronic design flaw.
took my 2017 Jeep Cherokee back to the dealer. Service shifter had come on, they said it was programming update needed. I was good for a few months. Then started doing it again. Would turn car off then on and it was fine, but eventually the service shifter would come on again. 28,000 miles on it now. Took it back this week they said it needs a new shifter and wiring harness. They have to order the parts so still to be seen what happens when they replace those items. :(
Service Shifter light comes on now all the time while driving. For those who got it repaired, does it work and do you have a Part number? I will file a complaint too. I think this is a scam to bring people to the dealership.
2 1/2 hours into my drive from NYC to Boston and a “Service Shifter” warning popped up on the dashboard of my 3 month old 2019 Jeep Cherokee High Altitude. I continued to drive and minutes later a slew of warnings popped up and lit my dashboard like a Christmas tree. The warnings indicated issues with the battery/charging system, transmission, auto start, traction, “ACC/FCW Unavailable Service Required,” and a nice loud and bright brake warning for me to stop my vehicle with an open highway in front of me. It was mayhem. I pulled over to restart my vehicle, but what seemed to be a safe idea to get off the road backfired on me. Once I turned my car back on after a few minutes, the steering wheel became absolutely stiff and I was unable to turn my wheel or shift gears. Leaving me stuck on the side of the highway for 40 mins. I decided to give the car a shot one more time and started it up again. This time the warnings disappeared and everything seemed normal again. Two days later I immediately went to the Jeep Dealer in Englewood Cliffs, NJ to service my vehicle and I was told everything is fine and that the computer system needed to be updated and reset. I was also told by the service rep that they test drove the vehicle and everything is okay. Naturally, I drove out the dealer feeling good about the services until I crossed the George Washington Bridge. The “Service Shifter” warning popped up again. I continued to drive the 10 minutes to my house to avoid being stuck on the bridge. Once I reached my parking garage it was an absolute struggle attempting to turn my steering wheel to park as the power steering was nonexistent. These issues should not be taking place so soon and I definitely didn’t sign on the dotted line to pay for a faulty vehicle. After reading all of these forums, I’m starting to wonder if a casualty needs to take place before Jeep decides they want to resolve the problem.
2016 Trailhawk. started about 2 months ago. Scared the crap out of me on the highway. I got off the highway and immediately turned off the vehicle. Turned it back on and the lights were gone. A few days later it came back. All the so-called fixes seem to be temporary. Not about to spend $500 on a guess job only have the same problem.
I have a 2017 Jeep Sport 15,000 same thing as all above. Service Shifter light came on with all shift lights red. After reading above sounds pretty common and another problem that takes time to fix. We all have so much free time to go to the dealer ha ha. Glad I found cargurus to ease my worry about the Jeep. Been good until now. Not complaining yet. I will call the dealer in the morning.
Now a Service Transmission light came on so I brought it into the dealer. (It was making a crazy grinding noise/having a shifting problem, and all the service lights came on in my dashboard.) They said there is some Recall Issues that they can run/fix on my Jeep...Great! So, I get a call back saying the Service Shifter light is on and the part, which is on back-order, will be $375 and no guarantee of fixing the issue...I ended up declining the fix as it would was not a guarantee. Upon getting the Jeep back I took the shifter apart and found out they disconnected the wiring to it!!! WHAT?? I plugged the wiring back in, and all the light indicators on the shifter lit up. I was able to clear the Service Shifter indicator by turning the vehicle off, opening the driver door, and starting the vehicle up again. Seriously Jeep, what will it take to start making safe-reliable vehicles? It is imperative that something is done about these issues.
Follow-up; Posted three months ago: Had my 2015 Cherokee repaired (shifter & harness) for this in mid-2017 and the message did not reappear until a couple months ago (~ May 2019). Seems to pop on when I shift into reverse. Update: Today had the entire shifter assembly changed out again as they had done a couple years ago. Although the car is now out of warranty, the last repair apparently was not and they again covered by Jeep as warranty service. Hopefully it doesn't appear again for enough time until I am ready to trade in.
This happened to me this morning on my way to work. After I got to work I shut my 2017 Jeep off and restarted it and it was fine. After reading all these comments I will make an appointment with the dealership and file a complaint with NHTSA.
This started with my wife's 2015 Cherokee at 60K , called dealer - known trouble no solutions. On solid now since 80k and now have 103k . I will look into Corey answer with the fuse box , but will be damned if i am paying 700 bucks for this since its seems to be a Jeep/Chrysler issue ....
I have a 2017 jeep latitude and I’m sitting in the service department at the dealership at this moment for this same issue. My gear shift has already been replaced 3 times !
I paid $119 to have the "shifter serviced" 2 years ago when it was under warranty.. I have a 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, that was a lemon to begin with.. Why I still have it I'm not sure. Had the transmission replaced already and about 15 other things. I think I spent more time in rental cars the first 6 months I owned my Jeep. When I went in for a recall update, the service technician told me it would be $600 to replace my shifter.. WTF???? I'm on the phone with customer service 877-426-5337. I'm not paying that. Guess who's not owning up to their problems!!! JEEP.. Sorry we can't help you.

I have a 2018 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 4x4 which was bought brand new in May 2018. I can probably count 6 times over the course of the 19 months I've had the car that the "Service Shifter" message comes on and all the lights at the shift handle area are all lit up red. There is no rhyme or reason to when it happens. I've only had it come on once while actually driving, the other times were when I was reversing into a parking space or the car was in neutral. After each time, I was able to park the car, turn it off and when I started the car, the message was gone and shift lights were back to normal. I am still under my 36,000 mile warranty so am going to take it in within the next couple of weeks to have it checked out. I love my Jeep and have had no other issues with the vehicle other than this. Will see what they say when I go to get it checked out.
2018 Jeep Cherokee trailhawk I'm having the same issue. Started at about 30,000 miles and continues to do it!
Blackoutradio answered 4 years ago
With all of us having this problem, has everyone not reported the issue to NHTSA? As a consumer with a 3 year old car this is not acceptable. I just want to know what is being accomplished with the forum without action and accountability?
oleeannderb answered 4 years ago
Follow up to my earlier post. My 2018 Cherokee is still under warranty and took it to the dealer yesterday to have it checked out. They said that a software update was done and they are going to have to replace the wiring harness. The wiring harness is going to be ordered, which will be in in early January. No problem for me to drive around my Cherokee before the part gets installed. I'll post an update once everything has been replaced and driven for awhile. Since my Cherokee has no issues other than the "Service Shifter" message and the shifter lights coming on, I would sure hate for some issue to start because of the part being replaced. More to come in the future.
Same b.s with my 2018 Cherokee Latitude. Turn it off, lights & message disappears. I hate this vehicle.
My 2017 'Jeep Cherokee Sport' had this same "Service Shifter" warning light pop up about 2 weeks ago. When I googled it I of course came here and saw the hundreds of people having the same issue. So i called my dealership where i bought it from.....they said.... "Sorry, while Yes you are covered under warranty still, we don't have any technicians here that are able to service anything transmission related. I'm afraid you'll have to take it to another dealer who has someone who can look at it for you." So while I was frustrated, I let it sit for a week. And then the Service Shifter light came back again. So this time, i took it to my Jeep Dealer where i bought it, and didn't even call them tell them i was coming. Interesting enough, they let me take it in and didn't mention anything about not having any Service men who are not able to work on it...and i simply dropped it off. Exactly 1 week later, I got the call and my Jeep is now ready for pickup. Meantime, they didn't even offer me a loaner or rental while being without a vehicle for 1 week.

I have a 2018 Cherokee and mine has done it at least 10 times. It has had the wiring harness changed, shifter harness changed, the transmission flashed also updated and it proceeds to hit with the "service shifter and illuminated red lights" This is a serious Recall that needs to be addressed!! Not to mention after all the word done it is now really hesitant on going and shifting hard.
Same issue with Service shifter. I have only had the car for 5 days. 2017 Jeep Latitude. Please file a complaint with NHTSA. I just did! They need to open an investigation. I did all my research on this Jeep prior to buying it no major recalls and great reviews, but once this happened and I googled it I found this page. As much as I love the car I wouldn't have purchased it if I knew this would happen. JEEP has to be held accountable for this.
Same issue. 2018 with 50k bought new and service shifter came on right after software update and comes on randomly now. Really a pain as I’m now out of warranty and this is obviously a manufacturing defect.
Themaintguy answered 4 years ago
I had the same problem at 35800 mile, after a bunch of bull and waiting, they changed mine. Now at 49700 miles it happened again.
Brandon221222 answered 4 years ago
Update, took mine in the dealer says a different part has gone bad... and that my jeep is now out of warranty and that it would be $515 for them to repair it. This is becoming a lot of bullshit. And im sire i speak for everyone on this page being tired of it. My jeep has 41k and they pulled up 4 SEPERATE occasions of it being in the shop with parts/transmission flashes they have done already. Ive made a complaint to NHTSA and everything. Something needs to be done...

Is there any model that is safe from this issue? I love my jeep other than this and it is time to trade it in.
2016 Jeep Cherokee with 14000 miles ive had it maybe 6mons. Service shifter just started showing up. I turn the jeep off and back on it goes away. A day or so later the same thing happens.
2017 Jeep Cherokee with 18000 miles, came up with Service Shifter with all the LEDs lite up red this morning after getting into the gas compartment which was frozen shut again.
2014 Jeep Cherokee. Happened to me about a month ago. Message went away and has not returned. Trying to decide if I should take it in or just go on my merry way. I have a friend with the same problem. She says dealer told her nothing can be done UNLESS the message is on when you take it in.
Just happened to me... 2017 Trailhawk, with 17k miles... "service Shifter" and all lights on.. happened when I put it in reverse out of a parking spot. Definitely under warranty, but scaring me as my 3 yrs will be up well before the 36k miles... Dont wanna spend $500 or more at all. Esp on a pretty new vehicle. Dealership said it is safe as long as the check engine light does not come on and stay flashing... hope I am not in a blizzard in the middle of BFE when this happens.
Hopefully somebody can find out what is going on here. I have a 2014 Trailhawk doing the same thing. I have reset it many times to no avail. I even replaced the light indicator thinking maybe the contacts on the chip were bad but this did not fix the issue either. Just Enough Essential Parts needs to rethink how they build their cars.
Same thing. 2014 Cherokee. Dealership wants $1100 to service shifter. Less than 53k miles. I can’t afford that!! I got it back from a transmission recall last wed and last fri it had service shifter lights come up. WTH
2017 JEEP CHEROKEE WITH APPROXIMATELY 32, 300 MILES BOUGHT IT NEW IN 2017 WITH 22MILES ON IT. I GOT INTO MY JEEP FOR WORK AND SAW RED LIGHTS ON MY SHIFTER, IT SCARED ME SO I SHUT MY VEHICLE OFF AND STARTED IT AGAIN...SAME THING..... I AM BEYOND PISSED AFTER READING ALL OF THESE ISSUES, I FILED A COMPLAINT AND WANT TO CALL NHTSA TO SEE WHERE THERE ARE WITH THIS!!!!
I called Jeep and they said I could submit my receipt for possible reimbursement, but they aren’t doing anything. They know it’s an issue and don’t want to move on it.
How much is this going to cost me? My 2016 Jeep Cherokee has done this several times over the past 3 years and was solved by shutting it off and on again. Over the last few days, the “service shifter” kicks on every time I drive. I’m getting nervous to drive it the rest of the week to work?! But don’t have a lot of options. How much is this going to cost without a warranty? I filed a complaint as well, such crap.
I am in the same situation as all of you. I had my recall done on Friday the 31st and Saturday morning all the sensor's went off and the 2014 Jeep Cherokee would not start. Had it towed to the dealer and now they say it is the Bezel and wiring harness that has to be changed out. $581 dollars and it the part is back ordered. Seems kind of fishy that ever since they did the recall i am having tons of problems with it. I have had multiple transmission issues and the entire transmission was replaced in 05/2015 9 months after i purchased it brand new. Total lemon and there is nothing i can do about it as it is out of warranty.
oleeannderb answered 4 years ago
This is a follow up from my 2 earlier posts. My 2018 Cherokee that is still under warranty and had the service shifter message and shifter lights coming on periodically now has a new wiring harness and bezel. The dealer ordered the parts before Christmas and they were finally replaced 2 weeks ago. So far no issues at all. I am keeping my fingers crossed and will post if anything at all changes.
Had the same thing happen to me with my 2016 Cherokee Sport, 80,000 miles. 3 times within the last 3 months. Shutting it off and back on resets it. Prior to this I had my thermostat reset because the check engine light kept coming on, even though there appeared to be nothing wrong with the car (not over heating, etc).
2017 jeep Cherokee trail hawk 55000 miles service shifter just came on. Will take to dealer and see what they say. I will keep you posted.
I have a 2018 Jeep JL rubicon with 17K+ miles. Since December 2019 this car has been in the shop 4 times with the same "service shifter" warning. After that warning comes on a series of other warning show up. "airbag service" sway bar service' power steering goes out. "park sensors fail". The last time this happened my wife was driving the car and it wouldn't turn off either. My dealership told me they have reached out to Chrysler and was told they haven't heard of this issue. I find this hard to believe as after just a quick search on Google I found 100's of complaints from multiple people with different Jeep brands Wranglers to Cherokees. The only thing that has been constant in these failures is it appears to happen while it is raining out. I told the dealership this and was laughed at. The guy said, "I think a Jeep can handle the rain". It is currently in the shop and Ive been told they are replacing the "Hybrid battery" whatever that is. I would be interesting to hear how many other people have notice this happening while it is wet out.
I posted on here 3 weeks ago about same issue... it was a little fight w/ the used dealer but they repaired the shifter wires no cost to me. We will see... picked up my car 2 days ago. Per the JEEP dealer they said it was going to cost the dealer $450 to fix for people needing a general idea. So far so good. And the JEEP mechanic made it seem like this is a VERY common problem. His words " Oh yea done about 20 of these this year... it's a simple fix." So JEEP is fully aware of this.
oleeannderb answered 4 years ago
My service shifter message and shifter lights never came on during rain. More often than not it was while parking or starting the car. However, several times it came on when I was driving, though it never affected my driving or the vehicle performance.
Chacon1Guru answered 4 years ago
2017 jeep cherokee, at 26000 the service shifter appeared. They change the harness and shifter at dealer afte calling the Jeep 1-800. The cost was $0. at 50000 miles my Jeep start to do the same as all other cars here. I think Jeep have to do something. Jeep will pay a lot of money for this error, and they still saying "We never heard this" ?
Just adding yet another similar complaint to the long, long list here. 2017 Cherokee today gave me the "Service Shifter" message and all of the lights on the base of the shift were illuminated in red. 26,470 miles on it. Going to call the dealership tomorrow. There is no doubt in my mind this should be a recall item.
I'm really troubled by this. I'm not lawyer but how can a vehicle manufacturer have such a widespread problem that has persisted for years (from what I've read here this shifter- related issue has been known from 2014-2018 Jeep models) and then when you bring it in, they often perform ineffective repairs. Eventually you run out of warranty -- if you had any left to begin with -- and you then have to pay and possibly pay again and again. I still firmly believe it should be a recall situation. In absence of that, once the shifter issue is documented, the Chrysler dealership should get one shot to fix it at the customer's expense. Any further recurrences should be Chrysler's cost to bear. The defect is theirs, for crying out loud!
2017 Jeep Cherokee 4x4 with 109k (purchased new, I drive A LOT) and had this issue since about 50k miles. Dealer used the whole “never heard of it” here in Ohio last year and I showed them this thread...said I would still need to pay diagnostics...so I said NOPE! My car has been in for numerous transmission issues, replaced all engine coils at 80k, had the computer reset multiple times for hard shift issues...and obvious routine maintenance. I’ve tried filing a complaint with NHTSA over this service shifter thing, never heard back. I will NEVER EVER buy another Jeep/dodge/Chrysler vehicle as long as I live!
Just adding my 2016 Cherokee Latitude to the list of Shifter Service complaints 47360 miles on vehicle suddenly popped up out of nowhere. Took in for oil change today and technician said it left a code in system he cleared out and said should be fine. Will see.
I've been having the issue for about a month now. I'm feeling lucky since mine is a 2014 grand Cherokee with 114,000 and this is the first time its come on. After taking it to the dealership I got quoted a cost of $1100 to fix after parts and labor. Now that I'm seeing how common this is it should definitely be a recall!! I'm not paying $1,100 for a whole new shifter. Ridiculous.
Have had my 2018 Jeep Cherokee replaced 5x now and harness mine was the first in our area?!?! They didn’t know and brushed it aside now it’s doing it again and they are offering to buy my 2018 and put me in a 2019 that we have now to test drive so it may do the same idk I want out of it but I love my Jeep apparently all makes from 14-18 have had this problem! Hope they can get this issue fixed!
2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude...had for 13 months, 46k miles. Tomorrow will be my THIRD time taking it to dealership due to service shifter issue. Been replaced twice now...looking like tomorrow will be the third time. Transmission feels like it slips. I will never own a Jeep again.
My Daughters 2016 Cherokee Trail Hawk has been having this issue as long as she has owned it. It is in the shop right now for the fourth time we asked Jeep to do a buy back and am waiting to hear back. If they refuse I have everything together to file fo a Massachusetts Lemon Law Arbitration. This car will shift out of gear and come to a stop with the service shifter warning and all the shifter lights on. This is so dangerous and is sure to kill people.
I have same problem with shifter warning but my Jeep stalls at stop light and I can't get it started. Happened three times yesterday talk about embarrassing! Now I'm homebound scared to drive it!
I don't want to jinx anything, but I think my 2018 Jeep JL has been fixed. Finally. There is a wire harness at the front of my Jeep just under the grill. You can see it behind the bumper. Mine was touching the AC condenser and had worn away part of the coating. There was a wire exposed and when rain dripped down it shorted the wire. I was told by the tech guy at my dealer this harness controls power steering, sway bar disconnect along with a bunch of other functions. He reset the computer and pushed it up against the AC unit, all the warnings came on "service shifter" "airbag warning" "swayer disconnect". He repaired the faulty wire harness and relocated it so that it would not touch the AC anymore. I have had the car back for over a month and have driven it in most weather conditions and as of yet, all has been good. I hope this helps all the Jeep JL owners out there with this same "Service Shifter" problem. Good luck.
Everyone on here needs to go to this site and file a complaint so they are forced to do a recall. This is ridiculous that so many jeeps of different years and mileage are having this issue. This needs to be a recall. Fill out your information on this site and they will do an investigation. If enough people file complaints they are forced to check into it.
My daughters 2016 Jeep Cherokee problem appears worse than most because it doesn't just get a warning light it actually comes out of gear and comes to a stop. You have to repeatedly shut off the car several times and eventually it resets.
Getridofyourjeep answered 4 years ago
Anyone having this problem I would get rid of it while you still can. I bought my 2016 Jeep Cherokee in 2016, a week later the service shifter light came on. I took it back to the dealer and they said it wasn’t a problem, and since it didn’t seem to be causing mechanical issues, I believed them. For the next 2 years I drove it with the service shifter light on as an annoyance but no problems. Then in December 2018 right after the warranty expired, it shut off while driving in a snow storm almost causing me to wreck. Over the next 3 months it progressively got worse to the point that it will only drive about 5 minutes max before shutting off, that’s if it even starts at all. It has been sitting in my driveway for a year now. I had to get another vehicle because the Jeep is undriveable. I filed a complaint with the Dept of Safety and Transportation a year ago, Jeep told me if they get enough complaints they will issue a recall. Meanwhile for a year I have not driven the vehicle because nobody knows how to fix it, I had to finance a 2nd vehicle, and I when I did try to trade it in I was only offered 8000 when I owe 20,000 because of it shutting off when they test drove it. Jeep should be held responsible instead of leaving customers out to dry, destroying their credit and leaving them with 20,000 of debt on a car that can’t be driven or fixed. If I could file a lawsuit I would, but there doesn’t seem to be any protections for car buyers.
Getridofyourjeep answered 4 years ago
I have contacted multiple Jeep dealers only to be told they have not been able to successfully fix it for their customers having the problem and to just keep filing complaints. In my Jeep, the service shifter light goes on, then you feel the power start to fail, then it shuts off and says shift to park. A year later now it also says engine power failure while happening and is lucky if it will start at all.
Dealing with this now on my 2017 Cherokee Sport w/ ~54k miles, except mine doesn't show "service shifter". I was stopped and several other warnings flashed, my check engine light came on, and it would not shift into gear. I had it towed to the dealership 3 days ago. They called yesterday saying they replaced the TCM and it was fixed. Got in my car to leave the dealership and it wouldn't shift into gear and all the shifter lights came on along with the check engine light. I left it for them to fix. I'm not really in a position to trade, but I haven't liked since I bought it new in 2017.
just took mine in for 2nd time since 2018 - they told me it has to be saying "service shifter" on the dash before they can do anything - that they can't just be replacing part after part and it doesn't fix it - my extended warranty has now kicked in - they told me "next time it appears do not turn your vehicle off, just bring it directly in to us" - lovely. I have almost 55K miles on it - bought it with almost 19K on it - in 2016
I have a 2018 and this issue started around 18,000 miles Is it ever going to be a recall? I'm under the impression it's an expensive fix and might stay fixed.

I have previous posts in this chain regarding my 2018 Cherokee and the service shifter light and shifter lights going on randomly . I was still under my 36,000 factory warranty, but not by much and finally called the dealer to have it looked at. On 1/23/20 they inspected my car and this is what they said under the general repair section after my car was serviced: INSP VEHICLE. FOUND U1465/P1C86 PRNDL DISPALY CURRENT OUT OF RANGE DTCS.DIAG PER SVC INFO. INTERNAL SHIFTER BEZEL FAILURE. REPLACED TRANSMISSION SHIFTER BEZEL & JUMPER HARNESS TO CORRECT. ALSO PROGRAMMED TCM PER TSB #21-045-18 FOR SHIFTER RELATED CONCERNS. CLEARED DTCS 7 ROAD TEST TCM 68345894AE/AG I have no idea what all the abbreviations may mean, but now, 3 months later, I have had not had any more problems with this. I don't know if this post and what the dealer did to fix my vehicle will help others, but so far what they did to fix my car has worked. Other than shift light issue, I have had no problems with my Cherokee and still am happy that I bought it. If anything changes in the future with the fix, I'll be back to post, but for now all is working great.
Well from what my dealer told me, they can fix it, for 2500 of course, and it still may happen again. But they also told me it won't cause me any problems or leave me stranded along side the road like some of you have had problems with, so I'm like well which is it? Others are having engine associated issues from this. Its frustrating. If its this common in all grand Cherokees no matter the year then it should be a recall. I don't have $2500 to throw down on this to fix it. Especially right now with everything going on. Frustrated as hell.

I just talked to keep corporate headers customer service. I was told people complain on line but need to call to push the needle for recalls. I'm in shop now with shifter problem. Call 1800 992-1997 to complain about the issues.
Scottpippen answered 4 years ago
Call 1 800 992-1997 to complain to keep. The more people complain the more likely recall will happen.
Chrysler has not solved the root cause of the issue therefore no identifiable part can be identified as the source of the problem. The end result is your vehicle is mechanically sound and meets the "MINIMUM" safety standards for the vehicle to remain on the roadway. This issue has existed since 2014. In summary, if it doesn't cause an accident it doesn't get recalled.
Update to my response from around a year ago..... My 2016 Jeep Cherokee started doing this around 12000 miles... I've noticed that it does it alot more often when i'm due for an oil change.. still not fixed, no one seems to know what causes it, or i get, "can't replicate the problem".. but i'm almost at 150,000 miles and it still runs great.. just have to to stop and restart . sometimes i will have to drive a few miles and then stop for it to reset. It is irritating as hell, but I still love my jeep, and hopefully they will have a recall on it soon, If not I will be Trading it off next year.
I am astounded by the fact that this has not been a recall yet. I’m gonna take this into the dealer soon. I’ve been having this issue on and off.
So of course I am out of the 36,000 mile window.. while my vehicle is still under 3 yrs old (2018 Cherokee Latitude), and the dealer won't honor my warranty or even waive any fees completely. I had to fight tooth and nail to waive the diagnostic fee, but I'll still end up covering the fee for the part/service. I'm so pissed that I'm having to pay for something that should be recalled.
It's been three months since I had the wiring and bezel replaced and so far there's not been a recurrence. Fingers crossed.
@GuruRMTHN do you mind me asking how much you paid to have this done? I have an appointment Friday.
@GuruMKQVL, it didn't cost me a dime. It was under warranty. I have a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. In service date was May 2017, so I'm probably out of luck going forward but when the work was done three months ago it was completely covered. Best of luck with your appointment on Friday.

Happened to me for the first time today. 2017 Cherokee with 39,686 miles on it. Pulled into a parking lot, shut it off and restarted it. The service shifter warning went away and so did all the gearshift lights. Looked it up online and found all you lovely people. Interestingly enough, I got a postcard in the mail yesterday practically begging me to buy an extended warranty. Normally I'd ignore it but am seriously considering it now, as well as adding rental car insurance to my policy. I can't afford to pay hundreds in repairs. Or I just might go trade it in...
Same thing just happened to me. I was driving in town going under 35 on flat ground, Service Shifter light popped up and the shifter letters lit up in red. Just got the 2017 Cherokee sport 2 days ago with 36,500 miles on it. 1 owner, reported no problems. I am extremely upset that all of us are having this issue. Especially as it seems it’s been happening for years. Will update after I take it to the dealer Monday.
Same issue with the service light. On and off the past 8 months. Sometimes goes a month before happening again. Turn the car off, restart and it disappears. Dealership today said it was a TSP issue and that Jeep is very aware of this problem but still no recall- Also not covered under the powertrain warranty. I was quoted about $350 for part and labor. Hope this is the REAL fix this time.
Eskimodoll answered 4 years ago
I got my mileage wrong above. I said it was 39,686 but it was actually 35,986. When I went to the dealer the next day, it was 35,994... Still under 36k and still two months on the 3-yr. Warranty. They made an appointment for the following week to look at it and by then, it was at 36,262. They said they'd do a one-time "Goodwill" repair since it only 262 over. I didn't even think to tell them it happened under 36k and I had a picture to prove it. In any case, they covered the cost of parts and labor. 2017 Jeep Cherokee Sport.
Not sure if this will help anyone or not but wanted to share. I run a used car lot and I just fixed one I had for a little over $100. Mine, unlike some that are listed had no lights on at the shift indicator. No matter what gear you sifted to, no lights lit up. I pulled that bezel out and the wire connector behind it that went to the indicator was broken. I ordered a new bezel for about $112 and replaced in in 5 minutes and the "Service Shifter" warning is gone.
Look what I got in the mail today! Is this what I think it is? Have they officially done a recall for this?

I thought it was too but checked with my dealership this week and the recall is for something different. The replacement to the service shifter ended up being "shifter bezel and wiring replacement"- Parts and labor cost came to $346.38. They said to hold on to the receipt in case of a recall for reimbursement

I posted a few times in the past on this same chain. I have a 2018 Cherokee. I was still under warranty when I took it in and they fixed the issues. It's been almost 8 months now and have had not other problems.
The recall looksblikebits just for Cherokees. I have a grand Cherokee doing this.
2015 Grand Cherokee 94k miles- I’m having service shifter problems too. Very annoying!
I've just had the same issue on my 2016 Trailhawk. Service shifter message that wont clear, and solid PRND lights all on. Happened just over 70K while on a long road trip. Late at night on an empty highway hundreds of miles from help. Nothing mechanical seemed off, so I drove half the night to the nearest Jeep dealer, afraid to turn jeep off and get stranded. Finally there at 2 am, I stopped and restarted jeep and it was cleared. So I continued my drive. It happened again 3 weeks later on drive home, probably 2,000k later. Again it cleared when restarting engine. Havent taken it in yet as havent driven but I've no $$$ due to COVID layoff. I'll call dealership this week if they can look at for no cost and know of any recalls yet, which I doubt. This may be the last straw, and trade it in for anything non Jeep!
I had my shifter replaced in 2017 for my 2015 Jeep Cherokee I bought brand new. Wasn’t covered by warranty. 3 years later, it is doing the same exact thing. Now the tech says he is not seeing the TCM update when he runs the codes. Said it was a battery issue as I have a bad cell in my battery.
It's happened to me again. 2017 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk started displaying "service shifter" around 11 months in. It was replaced under warranty, albeit with a long delay because parts weren't available. I believe they replaced the whole shifter. Now the car is 3.5 years old, around 40k miles and out of warranty and it's just started happening again. It comes on every time I go for a drive, sometimes within a minute, sometimes it takes a lot longer. The only good news here is that the car seems to drive just fine. But it's been annoying, worrisome, and blocks the whole screen so you can't see anything else. Infuriating to see how many other owners have been affected. Apart from this I love the car.
Has anyone gotten an actual lasing repair for this issue? Bought my slightly used 2018 Cherokee in April and its going to the dealership tomorrow for this issue.

Wow, this is a long thread, which makes it all the more worrisome that my 2018 Trail Hawk did that for the first time today. I bought it slightly used a year ago, and now it still only has about 18440 miles on it. I just restarted it, and those lights did not come on. However, today was also the first day ever that the gears showed up listed on my screen. I had to completely reset the screen just the very last time I drove it. Could there be a connection. A woman almost backed into me in a parking lot. Aiming for the horn, I hit something or other else. Really messed up all of my screen settings, and had to figure out then and there how to get back to the tire monitoring screen, which is important to me. I fiddled with buttons for ten minutes before getting everything the way it had previously been. Now this happens. Do I really have a problem, or did my button clicking confuse a computer and leave it thinking something is wrong?

2018 Cherokee Latitude 17k miles. I’ve noticed the service shifter come on a couple times but it only seems to happen when I have my foot off the brake. For example my wife went into the store and I stayed in the car. I was in the passenger seat and when it got warm in the car I turned on the ignition and got the message and lights. I turned it off and on and the same thing. I got in the driver seat, turned it off, put my foot on the brake, turned it on and NO message or lights. Similar things happen when in neutral going through a car wash. When the car detects motion in neutral I get a beeping and press brake and shift into gear message. Could be some interlock / sensor / relay between the brake and gear shift.
Filed with: https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls "Service shifter" warning light started coming on on the driver display this summer, accompanied with a warning chime. At first intermittently, now it is on pretty much full time after moving into gear. I am unable to use 4WD, see electronic speedometer, gas consumption gauges or other information on vehicle due to the error message. Took to Wyler Eastgate Jeep on 7/16, they informed me the bezel on the shifter needed replacement, and the part would be in the following week. I had them keep the car for the following week. The following week they notified me it was possible the part wouldn't be available until the end of the July, but that the vehicle was still under warranty so it wouldn't cost me anything. I have since followed up in August and again last week as the dealer never called back on the status. The latest call was on 9/29 (almost 3 months since first appointment), and the parts department contact told me that of the two parts needed for the repair, one was placed on "increased backorder status" from Jeep, meaning that the dealerships were "blocked" from ordering it or it even being sent out to the dealership. They are now unaware of when the part might become available again. From this experience and the other comments, it sounds as though the part is faulty, hence it won't be used on a repair. Sounds like there should be a recall issued if the part is faulty and the number of complaints is so widespread, and Jeep hasn't addressed it to consumers or dealers. My 2017 Cherokee has 28,000 miles.

Also have a 2017 Jeep Cherokee Limited. Same thing happened - Service Shifter came on. Called dealer for an appointment was still under warranty. While waiting for my appointment, a week later, my entire display screen started acting up and eventually stopped working altogether. Meaning radio, heat (apart from windshield and back window) etc - nothing worked. Eventually both were replaced under warranty. About a year later, the service shifter warning came on again, replaced a 2nd time. Total mileage todate (Nov 2020) is 40,000 km.
Bought a used 2017 Jeep Cherokee Limited 6 days ago with 43,000 miles. Same thing happened. Took it back to the dealer and they had a print out of instructions to replace wire harness and shifter per Jeep Corp. It will then have a 2 year unlimited miles warranty on the replaced parts. We were told there is not a recall because only about 2% or the Cherokees on the road have this issue reported and there needs to be at least 20% to warrant a recall.
Just happened to my daughters 2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude, it was raining, and she was driving home and all the lights lit up which scared her pretty good. It sounds like I'm in for it now. I cant believe no recall has been done bec its a "known issue" for sure!!!

My 2014 Grand Cherokee is doing the same thing with Service Shifter coming on, lights on shifter go on and off. Got a quote at a Jeep dealership that says “Shifter issue and warning light, shifter assembly electronics weakening, shifter electronics reading erratically-parts and labor $655.00. It is clear and evident that this is a severely common problem and Jeep needs to own up to it! Another common thing I noticed after reading this entire thread, I was hounded for months via phone and mail about getting an extended warranty and it all finally stopped and then POOF! this issue allllll a sudden came about, how ironic and so coincidental!!
The service shifter warning came on, once only so far. When I restarted the car, it went away. I have a bumper to bumper warranty so I booked it in. Guess what; the wiring harness and bezel required are NOT covered under warranty as many of you have found out. $400 so I said no. Having chatted to the Jeep dealership, I believe this item is excluded because it happens to so many cars and really should be a recall but it isn't a recall because it doesn't affect safety or driveability. I am very disappointed with Jeep and I would be happy to be part of a class action lawsuit over this.
Terry, we had the wiring and bezel replaced a couple of months before our 3-year bumper-to- bumper warranty expired and it was covered. We're in Canada, if that makes any difference. Happy holidays to all, despite our collective frustration with this issue.

We traded in our 2011 4 dr Wrangler Unlimited for a 2021 2 dr Wrangler Sprt. A week off the lot the gas cap icon came on. They took three days to find out the emissions module was faulty. A week later the Service Shifter" message came on and the car can not shift into 4wd drive. We'll see what the Dealer tells us tomorrow...if it is not warrantied - then massive complaints to NHTSA,

I just bought a 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara Altitude. I've only had it for a month and its at 1,260 miles and the service shifter message would pop up and go away. I took it into the dealership today and they ran diagnostics and saw the code and checked the wire, but said there was no issue. they test drove it for 10 mile sand it didn't pop up again. So I picked it up and drove home. Right when I pulled into my neighborhood guess what came on???!! Decided to check the internet and I guess its a common issue but apparently Jeep dealership is unaware of this issue...crazy! Anyone with a fix yet??? because I won't mind telling them how to do their job when I take it to another dealership in a few days.

I have a 2017 Cherokee Limited with 31,000 miles. Guess what? I have also just began to get the Service Shifter light pop up on my dash. I just called my local Jeep dealership and they have never heard of/dealt with this issue before. They said that they could run a diagnostic for me but it will cost 100 bucks. I just filed a complaint with NHTSA, maybe something will finally happen?
Guru95GPVC answered 3 years ago
I have had this issue happen to twice and fixed already and now it is coming up again. I have a 2016 with about 46,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, if the light isn't on when you take it to the dealership, they say that they can't fix it because they don't know what is wrong. This is ridiculous! I have also had to have an injector replaced. I can't wait until I have $ for a car payment again and I can trade it in. Also, my sunroof is leaking. The dealership said it would cost $2500 to fix. I am not putting that kind of $ into the car now. What a joke!
Reminder all: if you haven't done so please submit a complaint to NHTSA. That's our only hope of this issue getting resolved permanently: https://www- odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/ I contend the car is not safe as when this message comes up you cannot manually select gears, and neither can you access key information like tire pressure, coolant/oil/transmission temps, oil life, battery voltage, fuel economy, trip info. It also disables the ability to get to screen setup,

Our 2017 Cherokee 44k displays “service shifter” and all lights on the shifter go red. The car drives normally and once the engine is turned-off and restarted the problem goes away. This has happened several times. After reading these replies, I think I am going to leave it that way.

I purchased a 2018 Jeep Cherokee Limited, 23,000 miles, just a few weeks ago. Whilst driving today, the message "service shifter" popped up. Totally scared me as it locked my screen. I will contact my dealership tomorrow. I am so bummed. I just bought this car and love it otherwise but have never had an issue with any other vehicle I owned (Toyota, Honda, VW), particularly with a relatively new car. Have these issues been resolved for you??
Not for me. I wasn't dripping $2500 to fix it if there was still a chance of it coming back. So far it hasn't caused any driving issues. It's just the lights don't work on the shifter.
Not for me either. I have a 2017 Jeep Cherokee sport 4WD. Purchased at 34,000 miles about 8 months ago. Service shifter light came on around 36,000. I’m now to 56,600 miles. The service shifter light still comes on every now and then. So far hasn’t caused any major or minor issues that I know of. You can look up your states website for recalls on your vehicle as long as you have your cars vin number to enter and it should let you know if it will effect your Cherokee. There were none on mine but still makes me nervous at times after reading others stories about it. Fingers crossed it doesn’t cause any issues!
I’m not going to make a special trip to get mine looked at either. It’s already $100 off the bat to bring it in just to get it looked at. I have some other regular maintenance that I need to schedule in next 6 months and will probably tell them about it then. It’s more of a nuisance than anything. It resets when I shut off my car and then turn it back on.
2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude with almost 40,000 miles. Shifter lights used to come on every few days but last few months it seems to have fixed itself. I'm convinced its just a bad connection in the shifter. Usual remedy was to take key out of ignition, maybe open and close door if necessary and restart. Never has failed to start after the shifter light show and never has stalled out on the road.
Also I am seeing others end up with more problems after taking it to the dealer to get it fixed. I am considering selling/trading it for a Subaru Forester since Consumer reports reliability is below average for the Cherokee.
I am also noticing with mine that if you strike the side of the shifter console sometimes the lights on the shifter change and decrease the frequency of the malfunction reoccurring. It has failed to start once in my driveway since I had the vehicle but eventually started. It has never left me stranded. I still want to trade it in for a Forester.

Service shifter light on my 2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude came on around 46,000 miles three weeks after I purchased the vehicle. Took it to a Dodge dealership and the service director indicated there was a "service bulletin" for this problem. They replaced the bezel and module/ wiring harness attached to the bezel for around $325. It has been about six weeks and the service shifter message has not reappeared.
^^ There's a "service bulletin". A nice way of giving customers the shaft while acknowledging that Jeep has a widespread problem on its hands. I am at least a year since having the wiring and bezel replaced and no sign of a recurrence. Fingers crossed!
Traded mine in for a Mazda CX-5 back in 2020 and no regrets. Will never own a Fiat owned Jeep again.
It's now 2022 and no regrets trading in my 2017 Jeep Cherokee for a 2018 Mazda CX-5 with 18,000 miles. The CX-5 has not had any problems worth mentioning. No regrets so far. Consumer Reports gives the 2022 Cherokee a rating of 54 with a below average reliability rating while the 2022 CX-5 gets an 82 with an above average reliability rating.

I had same problem with service shifter message and all lights on shifter on 2017 Jeep Cherokee. I had it replaced from dealer a year ago and it just started coming back on and doing the same thing. Until they come up with a new fix, just replacing wiring harness and bezel with same old one will only fix problem for short period of time.

I have a 2017 Latitude and my problem just started a month ago. In looking at many websites discussing this issue, it is obvious that a recall is needed right away. People have had this issue far too long and obviously, some dealerships don't know how to properly remedy the problem. It IS a safety issue since some people report the parking brake not working when the SERVICE SHIFTER notice is illuminated on the speedometer display. If you HAVE NOT reported this, please take the time to send a notice to to NHTSA. Fill out the simple form here: https://www.nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem
I am in Canada. I am having to pay over CAD$500 to get mine repaired this week. It has gotten so bad. This is screaming to be a class action lawsuit: hey lawyers who are looking for new class action lawsuits, join this page and let's sue Chrysler over this Service Shifter problem which is clearly a recall / safety issue

I bought a 2017 Jeep Cherokee with 40k mi a month ago and saw the light turn on tonight. After reading all of these, I'm shocked the service shifter light issue has not resulted in a recall. I'm still in the 90 day window so I'll get it checked out. Something big needs to be done!

Hi Terry, I am dealing with this now. My jeep in and out of the dealership. I paid 2500 for new shifter and battery, and it is now broken down at dealership and they refuse to look for problem without more money. Not sure you still have yours. But I would love to sue. Might have to just get rid . Dealership wont even take as a trade in.

My 2017 Jeep Cherokee had this issue back in 2020 when it had 33,101 miles and the dealer fixed the problem under warranty. 4 years later and it's back again at 79,000 miles. Since I have moved since then, I hate to see what the new dealer will say now.
