Asked by Shane May 24, 2019 at 02:31 PM about the 2017 Nissan Sentra SR
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I drive a 2017 Sentra SR and just
replaced the engine air filter last week,
ever since I replaced my tach will
randomly jump up while driving at
constant highway speeds, it will jump
up to around 3k then quickly go back
down to around 2k. Can anyone please
help not sure what the issue is. Also
the car only has about 52k miles on it

I have a 2017 Sentra SR and mine is doing the same thing! No dealer can figure it out. I have videos of it and they are stumped. They’ve ran every scan on it. My transmission has no fault codes popping up. They’ve had to tighten the bolts on my axle twice. I’ve also had major issues with my muffler. I like the looks of the Sentra SR, but I don’t trust it.

We have a 2016 Sentra SR. We hit the interstate. Took forever to get up to 70 mph. RPMS running 3500 to 4k. Normally would be at 2500 rpms. Autozone ran diagnostic. Said Mass or Volume Air Flow Sensor.
I have a 2015 Sentra sv and same thing. I can feel it too. It’s been bouncing up and down since I got it. My dealership had no clue either. Makes me think it’s going to give out.
Nissan CVT's are notorious for early low-mileage failing, one of the culprits that is waaay responsible for lots of symptoms described, including car slips and/or revving up like hunting for proper gear at highway speed is the fluid pressure pump inside transmission, in fact it is not the pump, it is the fluid control valve assembled as a unit inside the pump that gets stuck open and causing low pressure along with associated pressure performance codes, dealer and mechanics go for troubleshoot codes and change solenoids and pressure sensors on the valvebody but those are false codes triggered because of lack of enough pressure due to failing flow control valve, steps are to drop tranny down, tear down and start removing oil pan to check for metal particles or clutch debris, if there are heavy metal particles on magnets most probably you will need to complete overhaul your cvt, a decent amount of clutch particles is "normal" on cvt's, if this is the case then just check cvt belt wear as well as oil aspect or color, if oil looks normal clear just replace your pressure pump assembly and please buy OEM and NEW, not remanned or unbranded items, also change the filter cartridge located near oil cooler and of course valvebody filter screen, once everything properly assembled you should good to go, pressure pump flow control valve is the worm on this transmissions causing most known issues as slipping, tcm throwing false codes about false bad sensors and/or solenoids, car not moving AND if you keep driving this way then you certainly will complete destroy the cvt burning clutches and torque converter as well as bearings...My exoerience working since 9 years on nissan cvt's as well as daimler chrysler corporation cvt transmissions.
My seems to be doing most of these, I just took it to my dealer with no codes popping up and they are telling me its fine. Good thing is its only a 19 and I have extended warranty so I hope I can get them to fix it before it cost me more money. Thanks for the explanation.
I have been having this issue with our 2016 sentra, believe it to be a problem called surging, Google has some common issues as to what causes this. I would recommend to start cheap and work your way up. I am.
Could any fuses being out for these parts be the cause as well?
My 16 Sentra is doing same thing, feels weird, feels like it wants to shift up but just can't and really hates hills, anyone have best luck with one of the problems?
I also just got the cvt oil changed so probably fine on that end
Thanks for the response!Yes it was happening before the cvt oil change so I assume they would have seen something wrong and hopefully also filled it properly. After messing with a few things and researching symptoms, I am leaning towards one of the sensors mentioned above being bad, I am going to check all fuses then clean the accessible sensors here soon, I will update you all when I find the exact issue.
I forgot to mention your thought on the fuel line or filter, going to be on my to do list as well, after reading this while I was out of town I went and messed with the fuel cap and tried tracing down the fuel line as best I could in the limited time tapping on it, and made sure the fuses were all the way plugged in, and fiance said it drove normal after that but has returned back after a week or so, could have been coincidence though, but now that I am back home I will try all the mentioned solutions, thanks everyone!
Anyone ever figure this problem out??

Working on the rpm and power fluzuation especially on hills. Thout it was the trans but no, then the mechanic looked at air flow. Will run it on a test and give follow up. No codes, next probable is vacum leak if cleaned sensors doesn't fix it.
my 2018 sentra does the same. i'll go on the highway and all of a sudden the rpm will jump to about 2500 or 3000 from 1800 then fall back down. it does it for about 3-5 min each time i go on the highway then it runs normally. changed the CVT fluid but didn't help

I just called a local dealership about my 19 Sentra surging. They said it is happening to Altimas and Rogues as well. They knew all about it and said I have to bring it in and have it diagnosed. They said if diagnosed as the familiar CVT problem, they would install a new transmission and the cost will be covered by Nissan. The only issue is the car has to do it on the test drive.
