Stalling in reverse

Asked by Donnie Jul 10, 2014 at 07:01 PM about the 2001 Jeep Wrangler SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was almost home and the gas light came on and I stalled twice. So when I got home went to go back out to get gas, stalled in reverse multiple times, but not in drive. What would make this happen?

Torque converter is not working correctly. It takes a little more power from the engine when going into reverse and sometimes the torque converter wants to lock up then the engine will sputter then stall. Some people have had the torque converter replace and it solved the problem. And it will not show a code when the torque converter is bad so the new electronic techs cant diagnosis it
