99 mustang GT vin X rebuild

Asked by Audrey Jan 15, 2019 at 07:25 PM about the 1999 Ford Mustang GT 35th Anniversary Limited Edition Coupe RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Im rebuilding a 99 mustang GT vin X top end
only. The reason I'm rebuilding is I shot a
spark plug out the head. I've been on a
budget doing this and had my machine shop
do titanium inserts for all 8 cylinders. Oil
pump rebuilt, new timing chain assembly
water pump included and new gaskets set.
I've ran into a stopping point where my
mechanic asked me if I was getting new
lifters. Definitely not in my budget this is my
daily nd I've put all my money into it already.
My question is do I have to get new lifters??

It really depends on a lot of factors we don't know. I really think your mechanic is asking about lifters is because with the heads off is the best time to consider new lifters. If you are over budget, I would skip the lifters as they can still be done later. New oil pump and timing chain is a very good idea.
