Audi Q5 key fob not recognized by car

Asked by Greer06 Oct 10, 2018 at 12:24 PM about the 2018 Audi Q5 2.0 TFSI quattro Prestige

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I walk up to my Audi Q5 with the key fob in my purse, 50% of time it
won't open. I have to place key fob right next to car door handle, and often
this requires multiple attempts before the door will unlock and let me open it.
This has been ongoing since day one. I have changed the batteries already,
in both key fobs. Yes both key fobs get the same
indifference from the car. I took it to Audi dealership where I purchased, and
the tech said these key fobs are "known to be finicky" and that this was
"normal" and there's nothing I can do about it. I find this questionable
because my friend also has a 2018 Audi (Q7) and her's unlocks at the first
attempt every time. Are there any known fixes for this "finicky" key fob?

Mine does same thing. Purse has to be on side of door that holds key or it won’t work. My problem is key fob not recognized keeps coming on while driving!! So annoying. New key fob; not the problem!!!

I have a Q7 and I have the same problem. Sometimes it even is undetectable when I push the start button. Then I get out, use the fob to lock and unlock the doors, and then it goes. I think the tech was right; sometimes they are just finicky. It's frustrating, but compared to hunger, disease, and lack of clean water it's a minor issue. Be thankful you drive an Audi. (I have to remind myself of that as well - and sometimes more than once per day.)

Had the same problem, two dealerships in different states could not resolve the problem. Took it to Audi service in Portland Oregon, Technician found the problem in one of the modules tied to the entertainment system. Was told there is service bulletin about this problem. Many times while sitting in the car, while driving, the error message above the steering wheel would say "Key not in car". I would have to shake the key fob to get the car to recognize it.
