My 1999 Ford Taurus, 116,000 miles, will alternately not start (will turn over, just not start) or

Asked by fordfun Apr 12, 2010 at 01:21 PM about the 1999 Ford Taurus LX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

will start and run rough, then die. mechanic says starter ok, alt ok, but he gets a ford code not available in ford manual.  thought it had to do with anti-theft, re-routed around that, did not solve.  car will start after about 10-20 minutes, and it starts fine, runs fine, just don't turn it off again!  problem went away for almost 2 months, then came back again.  ruling out weather (does this during cold or moderate temps, don't know about high temps).  Car may start in morning (first start), then no problem all day.  OR won't start (until 10 -20 minutes later) and may or may not continue with starting issue. please advise!

I would suspect the coil pack. It's a cheap fix anyway (~$80 aftermarket or about twice that from Ford). Also, I'd refer you to TaurusCarClub.cpm The Taurus Car Club of America is an INCREDIBLE resource and some of the nicest car-folks you'll ever interact with!

How funny! I did just that and am now the owner of a 2007 sienna le. Loving it. Will let mechanic know about suggestions. Love a car that starts:)

Check your Idle Air Control Valve(IAC). It sounds like it has died. It's supposed to increase the idle speed in colder weather/when the AC is on etc. If its bad you'll be idling on the throttle plate stop screw, and that would be too low. Next time you have it running, unplug the IAC. My guess is you won't notice any difference (functioning IAC this would cause the idle speed to drop/engine to stall). The IAC is on the top/back side of the Throttle body, is a 1.5 inch or so diameter cylinder that lays paralell to the throttle body and is bolted on at 90 degrees to the throttle body with 2-8mm bolts. replacing it is as simple unbolting it and bolting a new one on in place and plugging it in.
