Swap engine

Ford Taurus came with only two engines that year and they were both 3.0 liter V-6s and they were used in both the wagon and the sedan. One was the 12 valve Vulcan with overhead valves and pushrods. The other was the 24 valve Duratec with double overhead cams (DOHC). Your car being the SE model probably had the Vulcan and the SEL had the Duratec. The eighth digit of your VIN will confirm a match or mismatch. Don't attempt a mismatch. These engines each used different transmissions and you will also have a computer incompatibility nightmare. I hope this helps.
Can a 2002 V6 3.0 engine fit in a 2000 Ford Taurus

Like I said, there were two different 3.0 liter V6 engines for the Taurus during that time frame. Even if the engines were identical, there might be ECM problems jumping from 2002 to 2000. I would hate to do an engine swap, then it won't run. Call the salvage yard and find one or swap out something you have. These cars are not worth much so it might be easier and more economical to buy another Taurus in good shape. They run forever if you service them right.
Just a 2001 Ford Taurus and a 2002 Ford Taurus use the same motor?

Yes. Check the eighth digit of your VIN. It will either be an "S" or an "X" I believe. Stay with the same engine to get the tranny to match. I'm not sure about the ECM jumping from 2001 to 2002.
Is it at all possible and or worth it to try and swap a 24 valve with the dual over head cams into what used to be a 12 valve? If you had the transmission with it?
