SUV Won't Stay Running

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When driving home from work my 2002 Mazda
Tribute stalled on me. As I was driving I noticed
that pressing the gas it did not accelerate. A few
seconds later the Check engine, Oil, and battery
lights came when the engine died.

Now when I try and start it the engine starts for a
few seconds before dying again. In the few
seconds it runs the rpm needle jumps around from
between just above 0 to just above 1 before
dropping to zero when it dies. I tried pressing the
gas to rev the engine in those few seconds it is
running, but nothing at all happens when I press
the gas.

I know I have plenty of fresh gas and fresh oil, but
other than that I'm lost.

If the check engine light is still on, try to pull the code(s) to see what they read. Maybe there is a problem with the throttle body or other component of the fuel or electric system. When the engine stops, while the key is on, it is normal for the other icons to appear. The revolutions are low because the engine is not turning at its normal rate, and drop to zero when the engine dies because there is no movement.

Thanks for the quick reply. I figured the battery and oil lights were coming from the engine shutting off, but mentioned them just in case. I did get it to pull a code. It gave the code P0125 - Excessive Time to Enter Closed Loop Fuel Control. I do have one of those Fixd readers and when I clicked diagnostic information it gave me the info shown in the image I attached.

Very smart of you to have a diagnostic reader handy. If you have to take the car to a repair shop, tell them the symptoms and ask for a diagnosis, do not say that you already have an idea, some times they will try to get you to make unnecessary repairs. No reputable shop or mechanic should do that but, just in case. Oh, yes, beautiful kitty. Good luck!

Thank you. I do thankfully have a very honest mechanic, but since word of mouth is so good for him he can't get me in for 2 weeks. I'm wanting to try and fix it myself. Since I really need my car back asap for work. I bought a new Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor, but am having troubles locating it on my vehicle. And having troubles finding photos of it online. Any chance you have access to any diagrams that could help locate it? And thank you. I rescued her when she was a kitten and was abandoned at a dog park.

Nevermind. I found it. I just waa having a hard time seeing it because it was solid black with engine gunk from the years of use. I replaced it and now its running better than ever!
