Question type: General

float charger attached to battery plugged into wall. unplug from wall start car and drive away with float charger still connected to battery. ??? will this damage anything. to my knowledge a float charger when detecting above 12.4v the circuit disconnects wall power from battery car on in driving 13.5v so circuit shouldn't be live and i say that as in male wall terminal accidentally touches frame of car no ZAPP!!. plus they have 1 way diodes in them to prevent back feed i believe. so in the end i want to plug it in when i pull up to the house kind of like a deisel or a truck with a engine heater plugs in every night. but i dont want to have to pop the hood and undo the clips each morning. is my theory correct or if i try to drive off will i short something out

now i also have a solar charger with regulator from harbor freight i have left that plugged into the cigarette lighter while driving and no problems no blown fuses no nothing and that was a 45 minute drive before i noticed it still connected

Connect to battery before plugging charger into electrical outlet. 5. Connect cable clips to proper terminals on battery: black clip to negative (–), red clip to positive (+). 6. Do not touch clips together while charger is plugged in. 7. Do not place charger or electrical connections on ground or floor. 8. Do not turn on equipment that battery is connected to while charging. key words say while charging i mean to unplug it so it is no longer charging before starting car and driving off as it will not be charging i need supporting arguments to help aid in this answer

Most of these float charges connect with a spring-loaded alligator clip. When you dirve and bounce around imagine one of those popping off and creating a short. I had an Expedition that had a float charger that was permanently installed to a second battery, it screwed down to the battery posts like any other terminal.

It was built differently too, much heavier. I don't think I would leave a cheapo Harbor Freight one connected except when using it.

found answer on amazon Q: Can this charger be left connected when the car is in use or will it be damaged by the alternator output? asked on December 16, 2013 A:Yes & No. It can be left connected to the battery at all times, however, it can NOT be plugged in to an AC source while also being charged by the alternator. The instructions specifically state that this will damage the unit, & I have seen many bad reviews of this product because the owner did just that with their generator and then they go on to place the blame on a faulty unit when they never actually read the instructions. I leave this attached to my vehicle battery at all times, but the vehicle is always off before I plug it in to an AC source A: Yes, it's wires can be left connected without damaging to the unit, just remember to unplug the 120v plug before you drove off..... :-)

The one I had was made for emergency vehicles, it would even automatically pop the plug out if you had to pull out in a hurry. So not the same as the kind your talking about. But it seems you have answered your own question.

yes i did but your statement gave proof and validation float chargers can be left connected to a battery when in operation. emergency vehicle or not float charging tech is the same industry wide some just have a digital display some have mult. leds to tell u what its doing but in the end the microprocessor and diodes are the same
