If you are even considering putting out the money for an engine, do a Google search if used is acceptable to you. Far be it for me to tell you how to interact with your son. That's dangerous territory. None of my business. But that being said - make him put it in himself, get hands dirty. Leaning over, crawling under, et al. buying tools, smashing knuckles is all part of it. Then next time he will remember oil is blood to an engine. No have = death

But as you know-- with a used engine --ya never know what ya gonna get. For you to decide : is it worth it? The kid hopefully learned something. (seems like all used engines have 30,000 miles. Hmmm..what a coincidence
