2001 Mazda tribute starting problems

Asked by Bobsyouruncle Oct 24, 2018 at 07:02 PM about the 2001 Mazda Tribute LX V6 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2001 Mazda tribute LX has an intermittent starting problem.  Once in a while, the engine will crank but not kick in.  After turning the ignition off for a few seconds, it will start like there was nothing wrong.
When the problem occurs, I have turned the ignition on so only the fuel pump runs then try to start it, thinking the fuel may be draining back into the lines.  It cranks a little then starts.
The fuel pump was replaced a little over a year ago and I just replaced the fuel filter a couple of months ago.
Does anyone have any idea why this happens?

I have a 2003 tribute, V6 engine with the same problem. This wretched car always starts instantly until the temperature gets close to freezing. At this temperature it will crank perfectly, but never.....and I mean never ....show any sign of starting. It's as if there is either no gas at all, or no spark at all. The good news is that if I crank for about four seconds and it doesn't start, I slowly count to twenty, and crank it again and about 19 times out of twenty it starts instantly. If it doesn't, I count to twenty and try again. I have never had to repeat a third time, but it does make for a nervous start to the day Over the years I have changed, fuel filters, fuel pumps, spark plugs, fuel injectors tried various makes of gas,,a couple a fuel additives designed to clean fuel systems and injectors, and three different garages have had a go at solving it, to no avail .......in short ....good luck mate!!! ...let me know if you find a way!! Mike
