What could make the speedometer stop working after I installed a radio

Depends on what wiring you used to supply power and ground to the radio. Check all of the fuses with a test light otherwise a loom may have been pulled too hard or the radio is pinching something. The easiest and most reliable radio installs work with the adapters that plug directly into the car's wiring.
