2019 Ram limited noise when turning low speeds

Asked by Daniel Apr 29, 2019 at 11:21 PM about the 2019 RAM 1500 Limited Crew Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I’m noticing my Ram has a noise occurring when I
turn right at low to medium speed. Sounds like
something is rubbing, but no evidence of anything
making contact. Can feel it in the steering
wheel..any ideas??

I have the same problem with my 2019 Ram Limited when turning right and slightly left, had it into the shop 3x already to fix with no answers. Sounds like something rubbing / grinding when the wheel is at the 2- or 3 o clock position slightly if one turn and loudly if one and a 3rd turns of the wheel.

Same problem? I just noticed it today. It happens to me when you are completely stopped left off the brake and apply a small amount of gas while turning. Its seems going straight (forward or reverse) does not do it, or it's not as detectable as when turning. This happens to me backing up and going forward while turning. Does anyone have any ideas? I can feel it in the steering wheel and also if I get out of the truck and put my hand on the rear wheel well I feel it vibrate there too. I actually hear the sound on the back wheels. It's almost like the brakepads are grabbing? I am not sure.

I hope you are not driving in 4WD on the pavement.

I think I found the cause, seems to rub when the steering is fully turned

Looks like mine is rubbing too? What I don't quite understand is the noise is coming from the read wheel/brake area and this is rubbing in the front. I got it back from the dealership and they said they think its "Rear Brake (Moan) Noise" Needs part number: 68446866AA - Brake Kit, Moan. I am not sure this is actually the same thing as I hear / feel a slight stutter. However it looks like this part is backordered and no ETA for the part to be in stock so I have to just deal with it for now. As the picture shows above, should these ever be rubbing? I suspect the answer is no. Oh also, It really only stutters when you crank the wheel to extremes and move very slowly. So maybe the rubbing is the issue?

@mike Does your BACK wheels stutter? I have a video. At the end of it you can really hear it. https://photos.app.goo.gl/jKvBXMaM5choTpWg6 Is this what everyone else is hearing/feeling?

@Riley I have the same issue on my '19 Laramie Black Sport w/22" stock wheels and tires. Had it at the dealer today and they did not replicate issue on a test drive even though they I specifically told them low speed turning. I might show them your video and see if I can get them to sit in it after I pick it up today.

@John yah man. When I took it in the first time I had the service manager come out and see what I was talking about before I left. Sure enough the “tech” could not replicate the issue but the manager saw it. Didn’t really help that much because they were not sure what it was still.

Dealer just called. Left Lower control arm and Left hub replaced--not fixed. They are officially replacing the rack and pinion tomorrow.

Riley, Thanks for the video link. The sound your truck makes from the right rear is obvious and repeatable, and I don't believe you have to be turning for the sound to occur. My 2019 Ram 1500 Limited makes a different noise as described by Daniel who started this conversation on April 29 where he says it, "has a noise occurring when I turn right at low to medium speed. Sounds like something is rubbing, but no evidence of anything making contact. Can feel it in the steering wheel." I don't have to be turning sharp right at low speeds either and don't believe the wheel or tire is rubbing anything. Mine kind of feels like a short term stutter through the steering wheel. Have you learned anything new Daniel?

So I have a 2nd appt on Tuesday to get it looked at. I was able to repeat the issue at the dealer when I picked it up and they had a different tech come out and listen and ride with me. He thought it was something with the rear end (like I told them in the first place), which after I looked at the printout and it said they checked out the front end :(. So hopefully they find something next Tuesday for me.

Here is my update: The dealer had two techs take it out yesterday and drive it and easily replicate the issue. They did check to see if anything was loose in the rear suspension/driveshaft and didn't find anything wrong there. They did end up draining the differential fluid and did find it to be darker than they would expect. I do remember the first time I pulled our 4500lb camper with the truck last September that I thought the rear end smelled. I chalked it up to rust inhibitors burning off at the time since the truck was about a week old to me. Now thinking about it I wonder if it broke down the fluid or if the fluid was bad from the factory. The dealer changed the fluid and did 8 figure 8's which apparently is the procedure to break-in the fluid. They let it cool down and took it out for another test drive and could not replicate the issue. The initial thought from the dealer is there might be have been an issue with either not enough or something wrong with the friction reducing additive in the fluid. I drove the truck home last night and this morning to work and it felt like new again. I'm a bit concerned that they didn't pull the differential cover off to inspect the gears or check lash. They said they did not find any debris or metal in the fluid as they checked for it while draining it. I have heard from a coworker with an F150 that Ford had an issue with a batch of differential fluid for the friction reducer and his rear end seemed to sound the same as mine. I'll be pulling my camper for a 400 mile round trip this weekend so that will be the real test as the noise always seemed pretty bad when turning with the camper hooked up.

ok, It it the Power Steering rack we ordered for you. The sound you are hearing is the ABS initializing because of an issue with the steering gear.

Well, my truck completely stopped the noise I described above after replacing my tires. I now have Continental Terrain Contact A/T 285/45 R22 tires. My problem is solved.

My 2019 ram was making grinding sound when I turned slightly. Brought to the dealer and I was told that my reaR axle was missing an additive. Apparently known issue. They added the additive and I have been fine for the past 5 months.

@Michael, could you provide some more info? Do you know what additive exactly? Did they have to replicate the issue first?

I have a 2019 1500 and it makes the same noise with low speed right turns (parking). Dealer said this is normal with electric power steering. Said it was huge electric load on vehicle.

I have been in the field of N.V.H and heavy line auto/truck repair but mostly Ford products but changed my career after 35 years turning wrench! I have a 2019 3500 4x4 dually 6.7 and I too have a flutter @ slow turns to the left but very noticeable and felt and heard on left floorboard, more so after 10 miles of freeway speeds noise started at 7500 miles and was faint but odometer has 15,580 rolling 10 to 20 mph coast down to med turning left my best guess would be loose fitting spider gears on differential pin and case the flutter is spider gear bouncing off side gears up against the carrier only hot thin oil more noise! the dealerships should have been notified of a T.S.B. technical service bulletin! well good luck to all that have this noise as I'm in the same boat! someday I will connect chassis ear to front differential and diagnose that the noise is from the gear set/carrier. Just another distinction 3500 1 ton has a short stub shaft with U-JOINT not C.V JOINT! hope this helps. John B.

I have the same problem-- left front noise while making a slow right hand turn with minimal brake pressure, like turning into a parking space or into a driveway. dropping off next week for the 2nd time to checked. 1st time they could not reproduce the noise. It only happens once a day when i make the first right hand slow turn and then nothing the rest of the day.

This is what the dealership told me today. They can't do anything till they release a recall or something. https://m.carcomplaints.com/Ram/1500/2019/tsbs/tsb-s2019000003.shtml

My dealership told me that RAM is aware of the issue but no official fix has been released. So, I'm getting it back and told to wait a month, see if it gets worse and they will try to push the issue. It's been grinding in low speed turns since I bought it. A previous dealership said it was a rock, and removed it. That did not fix it. I'm now at 48,000 miles and still having issue. Will wait a month and do it all over again. Hope they have a fix before my extended warranty runs out....or there is a recall. Frustrating to spend $65,000 on something for it not to work as is should.

Tom Martin I have the same problem at the dealership (3) times still no Answer the manufacturer’s answer is working on it. Maybe if we all take them back to the dealer and demand a answer the manufacture will get a answer until then we will only get put off. Set a date to return the trucks and I will return mine.

Guys - hands down this noise is from your rear limited slip clutches chattering! My 2020 Sport 3.92 limited slip started doing it at 4000 miles after towing my travel trailer. Could feel the vibration in the whole truck. I dropped the factory oil today and it was black and about 3/4 of a quart low. No leaks anywhere! Refilled with Amsoil 75w 140 and 5 oz of Mopar limited slip additive and the issue is gone! Don’t know what crap they use at the factory or who checks the level, but mines fixed. Hope nothing got damaged in the 4k miles though.

I ha e the are issued. Slow rite turning. Not even a full turn. It's at dealer now with that issue and rattling noise under load. Telling me they don't hear anything. Also when the truck first starts up. Major rattling . Seems like it coming from the lifters. Quiets after 10 seconds. Seems like the oil has to get up there..

Mine is at the dealership for the third time for the rubbing noise when turning right most of the time and now occasionally when turning left. Last time I got a bulletin that said " aware of issue and no solution at this time". it has been 7 months of no solution so I took it back and said do something. I have video on my phone of the noise so I did not want to hear " we couldn't replicate". They did replicate and replaced the rack and pinion....I will also take it for new Michelin tires today so who knows if it will be repaired and why...but at least something is being done to try to fix it.

My cousins dodge 2500 started shuttering today when he turns slow and not when going straight... as soon as I jumped in the truck and felt it instantly recognized the exact thing in my Ford I had it was the limited slip differential maybe that’s the problem

2019 Ram 1500 Longhorn had similar issues. Intermittent rubbing noises when turning at slow speeds right or left. Early on would get slight feedback in the steering wheel. Dealership was unable to replicate the first go around. At the 30K they diagnosed it as the steering gears however as we waited on the parts it became an very noticeable even while backing up. Dealer was troubled & erred in caution and is rebuilding my rear end and installing a steering gear set.

The sound I was hearing sounded a lot like what you guys have described except it was definitely coming from the front end. It would happen at slow to medium speeds when taking sharp turns especially when going up or down a driveway at the same time. I accidentally found what was causing the problem and it's the most stupid thing ever. The wheel well liner was rubbing the tires and it was messing with the ABS sensors. They are OEM 20-in highway tires. Suspension is all stock. I cut the corner back just a little bit on both sides and haven't had the problem in 6 months. For those of you that haven't found a solution it's a quick and easy thing to try, see the attached picture.

2021 Ram 1500 Laramie with 13k miles. I have the same issue. Intermittent rubbing noises when turning at slow speeds right or left. I get slight feedback in the steering wheel. Dealership was unable to replicate the first go around. Then they said it needed a “module update”. The truck continues to do it. Actually to make things worse whatever update they did made the computer go haywire and the truck wouldn’t start next day. Back to the original rubbing sound, I noticed it began after I started towing my 16’ Woulf Pup camping trailer (very light).

2019 Ram 1500 Laramie 4x4 25k miles. Same rubbing noisy at low speeds, mainly when turning left. I have never towed anything with it, all parts stock (tires, suspension,…). I suspect it comes from the differential, and I am waiting either a recall, or a major fail so the problem is evident when I bring to the dealer. If in a limited space like this so many people with the same problem, I wonder why is the manufacturer waiting so long to recall the trucks!!!

They need to update the electric power steering software, it fixed mine 2 weeks ago. 08-137-21 rev.b. is the software update.

Mine makes this noise. I replaced the tires and the noise went away for about 5,000 miles, then came back. Went away again when I put 38 lbs pressure in both front tires. Now back. Looks like camber is off because tires wearing on outside of both front tires, but truck doesn’t pull one way or the other. Hoping that an alignment and tire rotation will cure it again for a while.

Mine was with the same rubbing noisy for about two years. I was waiting it to become worse so I could bring to the dealer while under warranty. The problem is that it never got worse nor disappeared, and with the warranty end approaching I took it to Hollywood Chrysler/Jeep here in south Florida for an investigation regardless how long that would take to be found/fixed. After three days and tests, they were able to reproduce the problem, and finally got to the issue. The backing plate was rubbing on the rotors. Apparently a problem occurred during the car assembly… the good news is that the noisy is gone, and no parts needed to be replaced in this service.

MattosN, what did they do to fix the issue? Do you happen to have any pics of what or how they fixed it?

Mine was the rear diff. They reprogrammed and installed friction modifier in the diff.

@Prodigydude, I also saw the same rubbing marks on my front acle. How did you get yours fixed?

I almost forgot this was an issue for me. It went away on its own and I haven't had any issues. Come to think of it, I think it went away when I got new tires. I'm not sure if my noise was the same as everyone else's.
