When I put my 1964 Chevy Impala into
gear the orange marker does not line
up with the letters and the car be in the
wrong gear for instance if you want to
put the car into drive you have to put it
in between the letter before drive and
in between the drive for it to actually be
in drive

If the tranny linkage works O.K. as in , you can count the clicks to know what gear you'e in , , Then I think you'll have to get behind or remove the dash , The orange indicator may ride on a string .

Hi your shifter is following the correct pattern P R N D L for the transmission correct is just your indicator is off did you put in a new steering column with tilt? or is it the same stock column?...the stock column can be adjusted ...the new columns are fixed and have two sets of PRNDL's one for older transmissions and one for new overdrive transmissions that screw into place for some reason they do not line up ...if its the stock column its a matter of just bending the needle so it lines up

Hi I checked the pointer is a heavy plastic and fits in a grove on the column and does not bend like a small metal needle...will need to look in the old shop manual and get back to you

There's a small screw holding the plastic needle into the slot. Loosen the screw and move the needle.
