Start by rebuilding the carburetor, Hygrade/Blue Streak are pretty decent aftermarket kits and generally readily available

I was told that the fuel injectors may not be sensing the fuel. could this be true and what may be the answer?

You said "carb". So what you have then is a throttle body and that's not really rebuildable. Fuel injectors dont sense fuel but rather allow it in and yes its possible that they're not opening but you already said that you're getting fuel and spark so I'm confused, where are you getting fuel? Just because you're getting fuel doesnt mean you're getting the proper amount you should do a pressure and volume test.
