Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 eclipse in my shop and I'm having some what a problem. the
customer had me pick it up and from what I could tell was that the cat was
plugged. it was running half way decent and then about 2 miles started
loosing power. when I pulled up to a stop light I had to keep on the gas or it
would die. customer said that they did a timing belt and it was running fine
untill that time. it did die on me once when I was heading to my shop and
would not start until I put it put the pedal all the way to the floor. smelled like
the exhaust was getting hot to that is why I was thinking cat.
ok so after I got it to my shop I first checked the timing and it is right on. aI
called the customer and asked if the belt broke and he said no he just
wanted to replace it. all timing marks lined up. I didn't trust that so I pulled
the intake and did a compression test 145 LBS across the board pulled the
rear cat and clean with no sign of cloging or melting of the matrix. checked
the codes before all this and had a P0300 code random misfire. this lead
me back to the misfire so I checked the cap and rotor. these both were
trashed so I replaced them with a new set of wires and plugs. tested the
injectors to leave no stone un turned and the came out .16 to .15 continuity
on my multi meter across the board so these are good have done this in the
past looking for one value to be higher or lower means usually bad fuel
injector. I put back the cat the intake did the tune up. figured that this is
done started the car and boom still running the same as before like I did
nothing to it. I cleared the code and it came back P0300. this is the only
code that came up. I ran my MT2500 brick on it and started playing with the
injectors here is where I seem to get lost. I cut power with my scanner to
injector 1,3,5  and there is a noticeable change instantly major drop in RPM
almost dies now I cut power to 2,4,6 injectors and the change is slow to
change in RPM dropping no instant drop here. what do you guys
think??????????

I'll take a chance on losing what little respect may have had ~`the car sounds like it has 2 fuel rails ..can the problem be in the even rail (2-4-6) If the answer is nowhere near close ...sorry, I'm an automotive electronics repair guy

it does have two rails but they are connected at one end. so the fuel comes in one side and out the other to return to the tank. it does have a fuel pressure regulator that I was thinking about changing it to see if may be I was looking pressure when it came to the last injectors if the flow of the fuel traviled that way. but I'm still stumped. I did a globle OBDII test on it and looking at the short term fuel trim showed bank 1 at +19.4% trim and then bank two showed -30.4%

I'm just basing that on the injector response that you got was all on the same rail ... it seems to me they should have a regulated discharge based on the pressure drop through the rails ... or the pump itself can't cut the mustard ... IMO ,, you are looking in the right spot and it's all tied to the fuel pressure somehow

And just for giggles I would check clean and tighten the negative battery cable at the battery, frame and motor connections. These cars are known for all sorts of weird things happening when they don't have a good ground.

I'm thinking the pressure would be OK at the first rail but there may be blockage in the connection to the second rail ... geez, they are a good size so I'm wondering if that's even possible. In my way of thinking ... if there is a restriction ... it's got to be after the last injector on #1 rail but before the first injector on #2 rail

Guy that tested it only tested rear. Wild goose chase he put me through he did he did

I am having the same problems with my 2003 eclipse I have done all the same test and get the same results on a coldstart everything seems to be OK and after it warms up and starts giving me the trouble and has no power I can hold the pedal down and I have nothing I also thought it was the fuel pressure and the eclipses have a fuel filter in the pump I checked it and it seem to be OK so I thought the same thing and I had all the injectors individually tested every one of them show to be working order So this problem only gets worse as the vehicle gets warm so I am still at a loss I don't know what it could be
