2019 Toyota RAV4 XSE Hybrid Fuel / Range Gauge Discrepency
I bought a new 2019 RAV4 XSE Hybrid in California in August. The range on
the trip computer has only been around 400-450 miles every time I fuel up. I
have been averaging 35-39 MPG per tank, but when I refuel (when the gauge
is on empty and the computer says "Refuel"), the tank only takes 11-12
gallons before clicking off and showing full on the fuel gauge. Recently, I have
run the fuel gauge down WAY past empty (30-60 miles) after it says "Refuel"
and when I fill it up, I can still only get about 12 / 12.5 gallons in the tank. The
vehicle should have 100+ more miles range as there are 2.5 gallons left in the
tank, even when the gauge is way below empty (see photo). The fuel gauge
and trip computer clearly need recalibrating. This is driving me crazy! I called
Toyota and they said there was a 2 gallon reserve - but that still doesn't
account for the range / gauge discrepancy. I am going to call Toyota again and
file a complaint. I'll tell the \ service department about it when I bring it in for
the 5K service in a few months.
Is anyone dealing with the same issue or found a solution from Toyota??

You can drive around 150 more miles after the refuel message. I've tested it with a jerry can with me. I was able to add 275 more km after the message before going dry. Add a 10 liters from the jerry can and another 45 liters a few minutes alter at the gas station. But when the car ran ou of fuel, i've got the message of hybrid system fault. I need now to reset the check engine generate by this. But not i know. 8-)
I have 2000 miles on my RAV4 hybrid. Mine always say full at the end of a fill-up but the tank is not full today it stopped at 10 gallons and I was able to top off another 2 gallons. Not sure if I could have done more but did not want to get the splash back of gas. I can live with this for now I am sure they will come up with a fix. but you might want to try the same thing.
We've had our 2019, Made in Japan, Rav4 XLE Hybrid about two weeks [Oct 18, 2019] and fuel gauge needle has gone slightly passed "F" on two fill ups. On both fill ups, gauge needle prior to Fill Up, was between quarter and half tank. Fill ups were 6.6 gal and 7.2 gal to fill tank. We use the "remaining miles as an indicator" rather than gauge needle [accuracy; shown total miles driven 540/39.5MPG = 13.6 gal used. Pretty close
