Trunk key cylinder attachment

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

In my 2003 Altima, their is (was) a sensor (??) attached to the back of the key cylinder.  It has a rectangular hole which
appears to fit over the rectangular peg on the back of the cylinder, visible through the access opening in the trunk lid.
When I turn the key, this peg rotates and I assume it either opens or closes a switch in the sensor.  See photo.  Can
anyone help me figure out what this sensor is?  The trunk light on the dash still comes on when the trunk is open and
goes off when the trunk is closed.  The key will still open the trunk.  The remote will still open the trunk.  All of the lights,
including the license plate and interior trunk lights work properly, and it wouldn't make any sense to have a lighting sensor
on the key cylinder anyway.
