Can I buy a new engine and replace my old engine? My car is a Nissan 2002 Altima. Does it matter what kind of engine as well?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I'm working on getting my mom's Nissan Altima fixed up, so I can use it. I like to replace all parts that is under the hood of the car. The Altima is a 2002. Would it be best to just get one from the junk yard or just buy a brand new one from the dealer? What kind of engine can be compatible with the Altima? Please help. Thanks a million. I don't want to buy a car as the car is a sentiment to me. Thanks again.

Anything wrong with the engine that is in there? & how many miles are on it? If all is in good shape, no need to replace the engine, just some maintenance would do...

I don't know honestly. I do know it has new spark plugs and alternator everything else I don't have a clue. I'm not too sure about the miles on it. I'll check with my mom on that part but other then that I don't know. Please help, I would like to use this car.
Does this engine run? and how does it sound? any knocking or ticking, the smell of oil or antifreeze coming from the exhaust? So far I don't know why you would want to replace it. You just may have to do some maintenance. Gotta know what troubles this engine has had...Say, it took a while for you to get back here...

Sorry, I was focus on my classes at the time. I'll try turning on the engine later this month once I find the keys. I do remember that we were able to put the car in neutral in the other gears. Ill listen to the sound makes when I turn on the car. Thank you so much. Ill let you know by then. Thanks again.
