Front passenger airbags are generally activated by the passenger weight. If a person (or other item) is placed in the passenger seat that weighs greater than 50 lbs, the passengers side air bag will activate. ones the vehicle is started. With passengers (or stuff) which weighs less than 50 lbs the passenger airbag will automatically deactivate in most vehicles. Read you owners manual. If you don't have on, most manufacturers offer a replacement PDF version on their web site.
