I never knew the Alero came in came in a standard transmission. Sometimes you have to push down on the shifter to make it go into reverse. It is sort of a safety lockout so you don't get into the wrong gear and go backwards instead of forward. Also, if it has a hydraulic clutch and it has leaked down, it will not go into any gear without fully disengaging the clutch because the synchronizers will block you.

Had a problem with the shifter/key interlock that prevented the car from shifting into reverse. If you can turn the ignition off and remove the key without the car in reverse, this is your problem. I actually have a shifter from a 2004 that should work if you are interested.
