Ignition problem?
Asked by Blonco84 Nov 02, 2018 at 11:22 AM about the 2006 Pontiac Torrent AWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have an 06 pontiac torrent. It's been raining here
the last 3 days. I drove to work and it ran fine.
Came back 12 hours later the battery is totally
dead. I checked the battery it had 3V so it charged
it. As soon as I hooked it back up the radio came
on, the gear indication light and the door alarm all
came on even though I had the key in my pocket.
Any thoughts?

Something killed your battery and a 3V reading is at the point when it will not accept a hot shot (quick recharge). After charging, what voltage does your battery show? It can be in the car and connected but do not put the key in or run any accessories. If it reads 12-13V, then I would suspect your alternator is not providing a charge to the battery. Look for a loose serpentine belt. If that is good and tight, check for corroded battery terminals and have the alternator checked. The strange stuff that "came on" for no apparent reason may be the result of a bad ground connection at one of the negative battery leads.
I charged the battery, checked the alternator everything is golden. Went out this morning reconnected the battery it fired right up. Shut it off and started it a couple times. As I was gathering my multimeter back up the car tried to start with the key in my pocket.
Check out the things in your pocket or the other items attached to your fob. I had the same thing happen to me and discovered that as the key ring folded in my pocket, it allowed part of the link on the ring to fold down and engage the start button on the fob. Took me a while to figure it out. Next time you work on the car, leave the key and fob on the seat of the car. I'll bet it never happens again.
I bought the car used it never came with a fob unfortunately.
