Engine wont idle on its own. What's my next step?

Asked by Christopher Jan 20, 2013 at 02:32 PM about the 2002 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Engine was idling roughly, back and forth from around 700 to 1300 rpm. Replaced the IAC. Smoothed things out
for a day or two but now the engine will not idle on its own. Still starts but wont stay running without depressing the
accelerator.

I would check air filter if dirty replace. But most likely you have a vacuum leak. Listen for a hissing sound around intake area. Some use ether and lightly spray it around intake and vacuum hoses. If engine idles up when sprayed there is your leak. But use caution using this method.

Head over to GAOwnersClub.com - the Grand Am uses the same V6 engines and there's a couple of things to check for your idle speed problem.
