noise from left rear

Asked by dalefremont Sep 28, 2011 at 09:43 PM about the 2001 Pontiac Bonneville SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2001Bonneville has developed a rattle that is coming from the left rear.  It is loud on rough dirt roads.  On the highway the sound turns into a steady shuddering sound and is quite loud.  It sounds like something is coming apart.  I had the car checked at the dealer and they said the suspension is fine.  They said it might be in the left rear door.  I don't believe it is in the door.  I had someone drive the car while I rode in the back.  I opened the door in a parking lot and the noise still appeared to be coming from behind me.

what side of the car is your tailpipe on? some bolts may have come loose and the muffler is rattling.

The muffler is on the opposite side. This noise seems higher up. It sounds like in the area of the left rear shock.
