Charging System
Asked by firebirdgurl95 Aug 12, 2018 at 09:33 PM about the 1995 Pontiac Firebird Convertible
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Alternator tested bad after discovering it wasn't charging the battery.
Replaced ( after i had new one checked at autozone ). Replaced battery as
well because it was old. I replaced the charging wire and battery
terminals/connectors. I also replaced the wiring harness.. STILL NOT
CHARGING battery. I went from 12.7 volts ( multimeter reading on battery, car
off ). Then started car and turned on everything i could in car and voltage
dropped to 12.2 instead of jumping up to 13 14 something. Also replaced
Serpentine belt due to wear and noise.
What else should I be checking???

Yes after market from local parts store and I had it bench tested there before installation. I saw it pass. There is no alternator fusible link I can find for this particular vehicle. I've also checked every fuse that I have incase its a shared fuse. All is working. I am suspect of new part as well.as the old alternator i replaced when I noticed it wasnt charging..tested bad in 2 areas.regulator ect. New one should have fixed it. I tested the wiring harness going in to alternator ( not charging wire ) and when key is on I get 12 volts. When I start the engine..It drops to 11.45 ( harness disconnected). Should the power going into alt drop when engine is on?
kinda low. i'll look at mine on next run.
Did you ever find a solution to problem mines is doing exactly that and I’m going crazy
