2005 Cayenne

Asked by Rcousin May 22, 2017 at 10:24 PM about the 2005 Porsche Cayenne S AWD

Question type: Car Selling & Trading In

Im looking at buying a 2005 Cayenne from a
mechanic. I'd be the third owner. He's asking
$7000. It's at 140,000 miles. Is it worth it? Will gas
and maintenance bankrupt me? TIA!

It's a Porsche that requires specialists to work on it plus it has a boatload of miles. VERY expensive to repair. I would avoid it.

I just bought a 2002 Carrera 4S with 152,000 miles. It had a 4- page CarFax service history and the car runs great and is amazing! If you have documents to prove work has been done then buy it. Typically a regular Cayenne is not driven as hard as the S model or the Turbo and is less likely to break. If you can do minor maintenance like oil & filters the vehicle is a great deal. My best advice is to pay $100 for a knowledgeable German car mechanic to go over it first. Typical labor cost is $90-120/hr. Check the CV joints & boots - very important! If the engine is very dirty and the car shows signs of wear and abuse then stay away. Typically the first owner will take care of the car and the second owner got it used and might not have been as careful. Also - If you're worried about gas mileage then you shouldn't be buying a Porsche.

911's are typically much better maintained and have better quality parts. There is too much VW DNA in the Cayenne. I have had 2 2005 Cayennes and both were unreliable and expensive to maintain. I sold both needing repairs that exceeded their market value (timing chains and transmission replacement).
