‘97 986 Camshaft deviation
Asked by Ash19743 Oct 24, 2019 at 11:53 PM about the 1997 Porsche Boxster Base
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I bought a ‘97 Boxster with 55000
miles. Changed the oil and was told
minor debris. They tested for IMS and
said the Camshaft dev was B1-3 and
B2- (-9). What does this difference
between 3 to -9 mean?

I think the answer depends on who you ask. Per this mechanic the value is off in the Bank 2. Expected to be in the +\-6 range. Per him 12 was max. Does that mean collateral damage has been done? Or does it mean it is time to get the IMS upgrade. I’m in original IMS so far!!
Since the IMS is doomed to fail you should replace it! If you think that is expensive wait a little longer and you may need a new engine.
Thanks for your frank answer. Very much appreciated! Car is now getting the updated bearing put on plus clutch.
