scan for codes. I believe this is a drive by wire car, could be bad pedal position sensor. a scan should tell you this.

Code was P2138. Occurs intermittently along with flashing CEL and Cruise lights. Installed a new sensor and it still happened. Replaced old sensor, husband drove from PA to MD with no problem this time. Will have him check pedal position sensor next. Thank you mikeatpriestlake.

Tour comment is ambiguous. P2138's are rare. Try checking connectors at both pedal and throttle body end. If all ok I've read could be ECM (ECU). Keep digging, as I've never seen this one.

Tour=Your; Got it now: you replaced BACK IN the old sensor. Ok. Check other connection. If it ever happens again you may have to swap in a used matching ECU. Such a pain....

Hi I have the same problem on a 2007 Forester. Did you ever find out the problem? Karen

Experienced the same issue yesterday in our 2005 Forester. Today our mechanic is saying the gas pedal may have some moisture about it. Does this sound reasonable?

Hi Our subaru specialist luckily had the same problem on another make of Subaru. He traced all the wiring loom back and replaced the Throttle relay component not linked to the computer for reading only linked for powering. Both cars are now fixed. But before this we did have a dodgy sensor in the exhaust - that is expensive - it was failing intermitently. So we had two faults. Hope this helps.
