The 97 Contour came with a 2.0L Zetech I4...what I came up with is look at your VIN on the Focus and if the 8th (eighth) digit is a 3 or a 5 it will fit in your '03 Focus, source: Edmunds
You know what sammijo, I can't. I got that information by Google-- each of your cars-- and sorting thru until the Edmunds (a reliable source in my opinion) site said that. It was not first-hand information, I was just tying to help as best I could
vin 3 and 5 are both zetec engines on foci from 00-04. Vin 3 is the standard 2.0L with mtx75 transmission and vin 5 is the svt 2.0Lvct with getrag transmission. I've been looking into this same swap since the 98 through 99 contour came with a zetec 2.0Lvct engine somewhat like the svt model.
