what causes third cylinder o misfire, plugs are new? Thermostat keeps jumping to hot too.

Hi l_wetherbee! Here's a troubleshooting guide to engine misfires that may help you run things down: http://www.mgaguru.com/mgtech/care/cf106.htm ... It's hard to guess whether the overheating problem is related. If there's a loss of radiator fluids there could be a head gasket issue but that's a reach right now. You say the plugs are new but have you checked the plug wire and distributor? The trouble shotting guide I linked here should give you a number of things to look at. Good luck!
