F150 6R80 Transmission compabiliy question 5.4L 3v and 4.6L 3v (2010 F150)

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2010 F150: are the 5.4L 3v and the 4.6L 3v 6R80 transmissions interchangeable? I have the 4.6L 3v (eighth digit 8) and wondering if these units are compatible/interchangeable. I understand that these are modular engines and components are the 2009 and 2010 years were at the end of the run. I know the engine bell housings are the same but are the 6R80 transmissions in these two (5.4L 3v and 4.6L 3v) compatible? and Are the lead frames the same, electronics etc?

The transmission guy I use said the transmissions can be swapped. Although the computer will have to be re-flashed (probably) going from one engine to the other. He added the transmission is basically fly by wire, with the computer setting shift points and proper operation. On rare occasions customers want a remanufactured transmission instead of it being rebuilt. On such occasions he has to flash the computer with a program he gets from Ford corresponding to the number which comes with the transmission. Not anyone can get the proper programming from Ford. You have to be a shop which pays a annual fee to access the download.
