You shouldn't be on a freeway in 4 low. That's for traveling through heavy snow or mud at slow speeds. Regular four wheel drive and slow speeds will do just fine on the regular roads. Keep the momentum up and steer clear of people with all season tires. Allow plenty of space for braking especially in icy conditions. Four wheel drive does not stop any faster than the other cars.

Quadra-Trac was the trade name for the Borg-Warner 1305 and 1339 gear case. It was a chain-drive system introduced in 1973 on the full-sized Jeep line which included the Wagoneer, Cherokee, and trucks behind the AMC-specific Turbo- Hydramatic 400 automatic transmission. CJ7s also received the Quadra-trac. This system included a differential to shift torque between front and rear which could be locked with vacuum.

The automatics had the Quadra Trac and it was a weird driving experience. It used clutches to send power to the axle that had the most grip. Sort of like a positive traction differential for the two axles. I test drove one on a large snowy lot. I was driving in a large circle and I could feel the rear end start to get loose and then the front axle would dig in until it started to slip, then power went back to the rear. It really kept the truck going in the direction that the wheels were pointed. -- I ended up ordering a part time system with a posi rear axle and four speed transmission.
