I had the timing belt replaced after it broke while driving. It drove fine for a few days on short distances but then it dropped speed. It will crank and go in gear but will not get up any speed.

Asked by Leah Mar 17, 2015 at 04:45 PM about the 1991 Mitsubishi Galant

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When it stopped on me I had a small
amount of smoke from under the
drivers side. It was gone before I
opened the hood. It smaller like a
belt. But none of them were broken.
The man that is looking at it for me
said the timing belt is fine and
everything is in time correctly. What
else do I need to check? Could it be
the throttle sensor or could he have
not done something correctly putting
it back together?

The 2.0 in a 1991 Mitsu Galant is an interference engine (http://www.aa1car.com/library/timing_belts_interference_engines.htm) and other sources agree. Since it broke while you were driving you may have bent valves. Sure, it's timed perfectly but it needs a compression check to see if there was damage.

Well, definitely bent bars damage to cylinders. It's going to cost you more than just timing belt. Probably $3000. To fix.
