Iv just reconditioned my 99 forester & now seems that the transmission is blown

Hi my forester 99 was over heating the Macanic
said it was the engine so I got him to reconditioned
it and now the transmission is playing up won't
move in reverse unless the rpm is reved up to 3-4
with struggle moves fine in drive 321 any idea on
wether reconditioned the engine has something to
do with it. Thanks
