What to do if my automatic 4wd won't engage?

I have automatic 4wd, the dash says that my 4wd is locked but all i do is spin the back
tires and get no traction. My wifes dodge stratus had no problem on the same hill hours
earlier in worse conditions. What can I do?

Do you have a check engine light? Also, sometimes the connectors get corroded and may need contact cleaner. Usually it is a solenoid that electronically puts it in 4WD.
