Wow, have you considered it to be more than just a misfire on cylinder 4? It could be a fuel delivery problem to the whole engine. Also, are you SURE that you are working on cylinder #4? Check and double check again. What engine does it have? I'll get you the cylinder numbering. Also, can you feel a noticeable misfire while the engine is just idling in park?

Do a compression test on all cyls this will locate the problem child, a valve w carbon stuck on the valve face will set the light,if you also have back fire it indicates a valve is open upon firing, possible burn valve may be the culprit, this would create a constant runnabilty issue. (Misfire) good compression numbers gas engines 120 - 180 psi diesel 250 - 300 anything below this range will not fire or balance the engine.

joef-The engine is 5.7 liter HEMI. Yes, it misfires while in park. tommcmanis-I have not tried the compression test yet. Thanks

How many miles are on it? What maintenance has been done? What happened when this issue started?

25 people found this helpful.

87,000 miles. Maintenance-allways oil changes. Truck shaked and did not run faster than 40mph. Now it runs rough/misfires and tends to stop after the engine light goes on. The worst is in the morning. Sometimes during the day.

I have a 2003 Dodge 1500. Same code replaced all the plugs and coils. After doing that and a lot of online research I removed my valve cover and found my rocker arm was thrown. It is a common occurrence in the 4,7 v8. Once you replace what the Dodge manual calls a lash adjuster and putt the rocker arm back in your error code should go away. The rocker arm thing is a common thing with the this engine and usually occurs on cold start up. Try running some fuel cleaner and or engine cleaner to clean build up. Good luck

The engine light flashing on and off is what my truck did and it will drive rough and will not drive over 40. If you can help it do not drive it due to damage it can cause to your catalytic converter.

I have a question for fresnonittanylion559??? Im have similar issues and have replaced all my plugs, wires, distributor, and rotor... I have a 5.9 v8 I have not removed my valve cover to check, but im also not getting any pecking sounds from the engine, just misfire and issues going over 50?

Thank you for the info, it's got to be something that is common on the ,5.7 Hemi, but I can't find anyone that can pinpoint it. My truck miss fires when cold, I can stop and restart, and runs fine the rest of the day, strong and smooth, next morning it all starts again, sputtering and back firing. It has two hundred and fifty two thousand miles on it, never had a minute of trouble, until now. Compression is good, fully maintained always. Love my Ram….

My 2003 Ram 1500 hemi 5,7 just started doing the same thing. It did it a few years ago and it wound up being a broke exhaust valve spring. Hoping that's all that's wrong now..

My 97 Ram w/5.9 was doing same thing. Fixed plenum ,changed cap ,rotor, plugs and plug wires. Still misses at idle and can't use overdrive cause it misses so bad. I pulled the fuel injectors and cleaned them with B12. There are some how to videos on you tube. Truck runs great now. 196954 miles on it!

I have an '06 Durango, 5.7 Hemi that had a rough idle/misfire on every cold start that would last for about 2min then go away. Mechanic thought it was a sticky valve. After some investigating, it turned out that it wasn't. Mechanic looked at both O2 sensors. Misfire was on one side of motor. Changed O2 sensors around, then misfire showed up on other side. O2 sensors suspect, then replaced and so far car starts fine. Only been a couple of days though. So far so good.

Be sure fuel filter is replaced on regular schedule. Improper fuel pressure will cause injectors to not perform properly.

I took my truck to the dealer for my auto start issue, they told me I had a mis fire #4 suggested tune up. Had the tune up and now my engine light is on, back to dealer - they forgot to do the computer update, 1 week later engine light on again. back to the dealer they are saying mis fire #4. Truck runs fine 09 hemi - now they are saying I need 2000.00 of engine work. Could the dealer be the one who caused the issue by not setting the computer and I drove it for a week after the "tune up"

Just took my 2012 RAM with 5.7 HEMI and 110k miles to the dealer to check out Check Engine light - truck runs fine but auto- start will disengage after a few seconds. Dealer said, 'needs a new head' (at cost of $2500) - I'm going to try replacing plugs & wires and coil packs first.

15 people found this helpful.
860

I did a little research on Dodge forums and the worst case scenario for my 5.7 HEMI (said it was common) is BROKEN VALVE SPRINGS, in which case, a new head would be required. But as I said, I will try new plug & wires and coil packs first.

Steve we have replaced all the spark plugs and spark plug wires on my 2003 Dodge Ram 4x4/hemi. It's still not running right...from reading here we're thinking it could be broken valve springs :(.

860

Well, my solution was, the dealer replaced the bad head, cam shaft, and 2 lifters (at a cost of $3300). It's apparently a defect, but Chrysler-Dodge won't touch it (I called them). But who's the say, the OTHER head won't go bad? This is my FIRST and LAST Dodge.

Steve yes same thing with my 2011. As you said this is a known issue with all dodge ram 5.7 hemi's 2004 to 2011. Third cylinder misfire. Replaced the brain sensor. All plugs coil packs sensors and still had third cylinder misfire. As of right now the truck is still in the shop and they're still trying to diagnose the problem. They have pulled the valve covers and are waiting for parts they say it needs a new lifter.

I posted this on another thread, but here it is, for you - my dealer finally said that I needed to have a new head to fix the problem - after getting into it, said needed new can shaft and 2 lifters, too. So I bit the bullet and had them do it (cost $3300). So far, truck is doing fine - but who's to say, the other head won't do the same thing?

I’ve had the same issue and this is the 2nd time. 2013 Ram 1500 5.7 hemi. First time was cylinder 4, now about a year later cylinder 1 misfire. Last time they replaced the head and cam shaft under warranty. My truck is currently at the dealership waiting on full diagnostic. I think Chrysler should drop a new engine in it. Who’s to say the others are going to go bad after my warranty is up?

Sean This is so sad. Same issue.misfire on 8. Only 90,000 km when issue first started. Have spent $1000 and still cant find problem. Truck has been maintained exceptionly well. Dodge dealership says problem must be inside the engine and it will be very expensive to repair. This seems to be a very common defect that dodge is having with their 5.7 litre engines. It is not acceptable for such a large automotive company to manufacture a defective engine and not issue a recall notice or offer up the necessary repair when required. Any takers in organizing A petition. Action comes with numbers!!!!!

Diagnosis was bad cam sensor and requires new plugs. Replaced still had issue. After going deeper found cam shaft lobe on #2 cylinder had been ground down due to a seized lifter roller. All lifters and cam shaft replaced. No warranty big $$$&.

2007 Durango with 5.7 hemi. Did all lifters, camshaft, PCM, #6 MDS, and moved all coil packs and injectors around but still get P1416 (cyl 6 reactivation) code. Truck warms up nicely after sitting overnight. 1-2 minutes later truck misfires and shakes and creates P1416 code. Turn it off, count to 10, restart and it is perfect for the rest of the day. So is it O2 sensors? Defective MDS? 2 months tearing my hair out trying to solve this.

005 Dodge Ram with 5.7 195K on engine and misfire on cylinder 8. Runs fine but has loud ticking and if over 3500 RPM get backfire sound. So far replaced plug wires and swapped coil packs and not resolved. Going to replace injector next to see if this fixes issue. Also noticed other day 4wheel drive shows led indictor engauged and solid light but it really is not in 4 wheel drive so no clue where to start troubleshooting that issue.

2011 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport 5.7 Hemi, 103,000 miles. Cylinder 5 misfire, after full tune up did nothing and compression test relieves nothing, pulled valve cover and no oil coming out of cylinder 5 intake rocker, and camshaft lifter and cam lobe are destroyed. As soon as you search Hemi misfire or Hemi bad lifter or bad Hemi camshaft on YouTube you'll see TONS of these videos (and tons more "Me too's" in every comment section, just like here) on every (what I've noticed) non-MDS cylinder intake side, guessing a MDS oil control/flow Hemi flaw! Also broken valve springs. Chrysler not taking any responsibility for thier poor parts/design. Seems to affect 5.7 Hemi's? Getting ready to pull and replace the motor with aftermarket parts to try and avoid this issue again! Unfortunately not worth the risk to me to spend the time and money and just fix the cam/lifters when the motor's been ran full of metal shavings for who knows how long. Upgrade time!

2013 ram 1500 tradesman 5.7l hemi, had p0305 code, took it to machanic make long story short changed out with MDS Delete kit, which included cam shaft, lifters, springs, timing change kit, new oil pump, new water pump, coils, plugs, thermostat and air filter. No signs of damage piston and the heads we're reworked. Turned MDS off and tuned from 87 octane to 91 octane tune with DiabloSport i3. After all that money in parts and time now I'm getting misfire in cylinder 1 and no compression. What should I check now?

I did extensive research (did all the normal stuff, spark plugs, wires, coils, etc) and found out that it was (on my car at least) a faulty cam and lifters. Seems like hundreds of other people are having this issue and it hasnt been addressed and/or recalled by chrysler. Luckily mine was under warranty, but a lot of people have to pay thousands out of pocket. Look it up on youtube (5.7 hemi cam and lifter failure) and they have tens of thousands of views, so we aren't the only ones with this issue.

Well this does not appear to be good for my 05 Ram 1500 Daytona Package 5.7 Hemi w/154k on it. It is hard to start and with the fuel pressure tester on it before start it reads 0 PSI. After start is 56-58 PSI but it does not change when revved and instantly back to zero when I shut it off. Has slow acceleration and an odd stutter when it prepares to shift. The CEL will flash and I finally got a stored code last night. Checked trans fluid and then tried unplugging EGR. I really hope it's not the valve springs but I guess I'll learn today.

I've got an 04 1500 with the same overall setup as the Daytona. Side by side shows that the Daytona is having a fuel delivery issue. 04 1500 has pressure even after sitting for a few days and holds after it is shutoff. Fuel pump unit includes the fuel pressure reg and the fuel filter. Going to change it on the Daytona tonight and see if that changes anything.

My 96 1500 5.2 started misfire yesterday on a 70 mile hwy ride. Felt it when had to let off the gas and then back on it. Pull off the exit sputtered and died. Hold the throttle wide open it would start and sputter like crazy. At idle was fine-touch gas cut and died. Ran through all scenarios in my head, fuel pressure? No, getting gas. Bad plugs, wires, or coil? No, getting spark. Vaccum leak? Couldn't hear one. End of the day answer was a corroded through coolant temperature sensor. 2 wire that runs back to the ecm. Replaced it, fired right up.

Hi all, I also had engine problems. 2012 Ram 2500 4x4 SLT 5.7 hemi. I went through same problems just like many of you. Long story short--- Cam shaft lobe number 1 was shot. I had gone through every thing I could possibly do. Changed spark plugs, ejectors, all external sensors, coil packs, ran sea foam, checked fuel pressure, injector wiring, pressure tests on cylinders, EVERYTHING. Finally bit the bullet and did a top end over haul. Dodge company used inferior cam shafts, and they new it! So I changed the cam shaft, lifters, rods, timing chain, all bearings. Runs great now after $4000 dollars. We need to sue Dodge for their mistake.

I got a 08 Charger Pursuit 5.7l and cylinder #7 misfiring... the car has always run strong has 242,000km checked all the spark plugs coil packs wiring ect everything looks fine brought to shop this morning and called me late this afternoon telling me theirs no compression in cylinder 7 and the problem is internal and have to take it to another shop they know of. How crazy is this going to be? Is it going to be worth it? Or just call it quits before I get in over my head like most of us on here?

2 people found this helpful.
170

StoneB87... If you have no compression you likely have another issue than just a dead lifter/flat cam lobe. That didn't cause any compression loss on mine becaue the valve still closes (just doesn't open enough) and the compression comes from the power stroke, which still remains in tact. You likely dropped a valve seat or broke a valve spring, or possibly piston/ring came apart in that cylinder? I would pull the valve cover on that side and see what's happening in the valvetrain, you may be lucky and just need a new valve spring?

i had a similar issue on my 07 Aspen with a hemi. last dec i replaced the mds solenoids and all sprk plugs...ever since i was chasing a p304 and p0300 misfire and everything i did to correct the problem didnt fix it.. i swapped coils- nothing, swapped injectors - nothing, swapped plugs -nothing. did leak down test and it came back ok.. did compression test and best i could get it to read was 50 psi on cyl 4 i pulled valve covers off and inspected lifters and springs didnt find any problems on boith heads. did LOTS AND LOTS of research and found bunch of people talking about the hemi tick and ground cams... so i pulled heads off and pulled lifters.. the lifters were looking like new with no abnormal wear but i did feel a couple rough spots in the roller bearings on 1 or 2 of the lifters so i changed them out with new ones. i used a bore camera and inspected the cam and it looked good no grinding or abnormal wear so i put it back to gether with NEW HEADS... i figured if i had a bad valve or spring it would be cheaper to put new heads on then have the machine shop replace all the springs or valves. so get it all back together and it still runs like shit.. and still misfiring on cylinder 4 and p0300 along with a list of 12 other codes- clear all codes and start all over again switching coils and plugs still same recheck codes and i had 2112 or 2122 which ever it is for the accelerator / throttle position sensor and knowing these sensors cause issues and often times dont set codes i replaced the accelerator pedal asembly and recalibrated it with the scan tool and i had throttle resposne 1 time ... then i shut it off and cleared the codes and started it up and i had nothing but accelerator pedal codes ... i tried recalibrating it 5 times with the new and old pedal and nothing the ecm wasnt seeing the pedal at all no volts in or out and no movement of the throttle ... thats when i had it towed to the dealer .. they saw same thing and said its a wiring issue in the main harness between ecm and gas pedal. well after 3 hours labor they fixed accelerator pedal and ecm saw it and had throttle response i picked it up and it still misfired but by the time i got it home it was running perfcetly no miss and had power again i cleared the codes and now i just have 1 code for a oxygen sensor . so before you go and blow 1000 dollars on parts you might not need have the tps/gas pedel wiring checked out. after that all the issues i was having before with the running and the other things that werent related to engine performance have all started working properly... even my transfercase has stopped randomly switching in and out of hi/lo

Same things with my 2014 semi 5.7. This should be a class action law suit against RAM. Too many people having the same issues, spending thousands of dollars chasing attempted fix after fix after fix when it really boils down to having the engine replaced. What a POS, can't even last past 100k.

3 people found this helpful.
90

Dodge is well aware of the problem but they will not issue a Recall because it is Not a Safety Issue, and no one is likely to die from this engineered defect. Numerous possible problems cause this condition - (1) Broken Valve components on one cylinder. (2) improper heat treatment to camshaft causing early rapid wear on one or more cylinders. Only fix - replace engine (according to the dealer), Problem is, no more spare parts available, even the junk yards are out. And the replacement engine is no longer being made. Move to a smaller engine and replace entire wiring harness and computer.
