No power

Asked by Elsie1RSA Dec 30, 2011 at 03:05 PM about the 1969 Volkswagen Beetle

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi,  I am from South Africa.  I have recently bought a VW Beetle 1969 model 1.6.  The car however has no power, even if I  step on the gas pedal flat.  It still moves in a very slow speed.  What is the cause of this.

Thanks

first you need to do a tune up. replace spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, and points. make sure you set the points. then check timing. while your doing this, you can get a look at the engine and see if anything else looks funny or wore. also check the throttle cable and carb linkage and make sure you are getting full throttle. without knowing the condition of these parts, your problem will be a shot in the dark.

Did the prior owner tell you there is a power loss before you bought It? The first thing I would is check your firing order of 1432. Without that you will have very little power. I had a 69 and 71. After the firing order is checked, do what Chris said above

I am the same problem on my 1971 Beetle 1600--fully tuned up-new plugs-new points-new condencer-in sact complete new distributor-new plug lead wires-timing is perfect--this car was never like this in the past-starts-ides perfect but on the road just sluggish and uphill battles to even keep a speed of 50km?
