When you turn key on the check engine light will

They can burn out. Yours should be an LED. You could also poke around with the wire harness with a meter and make sure that isn't the problem. A working CEL is required to pass an emissions test in states that have those.

i have a 2003 Silverado 1500 LS and it did'nt pass smog due to the engine light not working. How can i fix this? so i can get my tags.
