I have a 2005 PT Cruiser and today the temperature light came on and the temperature gave dropped to ice cold? I am wondering if that means the thermostat is broken? I haven't just had work done and the car is running fine.

Sounds like your thermostat is stuck open. The fluid is not heating up. It's just cycling through the engine. Time to replace it. Car will run fine, but you will have no heat. Replace it sooner than later. If it closes on you, the car will over heat and leave you on the side of the road.
