i have a 1998 jeep grand cheeroke lareado.  
The rear door latch will via the key sounds
like its locking and unlocking inside but will
not enguage the latch post...the door will not
latch and stay shut.  How do i get the door
latch to release the hasp...its like it wont
release and catch the latch post mounted on
the car.  The rear door will not shut or even
catch at all.  How do i get the latching
mechanism to release the hasp that grabs the
post?

this is a very simple thing to fix on the hatch the latch is closed if u look closely u will see wat looks like a hook take a screwdriver put in the center hole inside the latch on the liftgate now while pulling outer handle pull the screwdriver down wards toward other part of latch asif it was latched and u where opening the liftgate

Thank you!!! That did it!!! And i adjusted the rod inside...works perfectly. I love this site!!!although i feel dumb now.... Lol

Does anyone know what the screw that holds the locking mechanism in rear hatch lift gate? Currently only have one but do not know the name of it. I have a Jeep Cherokee 2000.
