2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee makes rattling noise when in idle or reverse, coming from the rear.

Asked by kab317 May 27, 2014 at 07:54 PM about the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When going in reverse, regardless of if the car is warmed up or not, there is a loud
rattling sound coming from the right rear. The sound used to only happen when in
reverse but now occurs when in idle most of the time. There is also a grinding noise
when I make right hand turns. Exhaust pipe looks to be loose but not loose enough to
be causing this. When I go over bumps there is no rattling sound most of the time.
When this is happening I am in 2WD. I haven't tried it in 4WD since the winter.

When I see a person list a lot of unrelated stuff all rolled together I am a bit concerned about their d.i.y. skill level. When it comes to the muffler I might tell you how easy that is and walk you through but when it comes to safety I will only say : please find an honest mechanic, get a written quote and do it before a wheel falls off,

Maybe heat shield is causing the rattling. My jeep did same thing started in reverse only but then did it all the time. Mechanic said heat shiled was bad and needed to be replaced. Good luck!
