2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Engine Replacement

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee.  I brought it in for some brakes and a little rough
idling problem.  The Jeep dealer told me I needed a new engine !  How much should this
cost?  The shop I bought it from 4 months ago said they rebuilt the engine so I am having
them look at it tomorrow.  -Thanks

Why specifically did the dealer say you need a new engine? They must have a reason, but you are entitled to know specifically, exactly what is wrong with yours. You are talking $3-$4,000

Thanks FordNut. That is a great question and one I probably should have asked. I just got the call from them this morning so am "freaking- out" a bit. he mentioned it wouldn't hold pressure and the oil was down three quarts. I'll have to find out more tonight when I pick it up. Thanks !

The dealer quotes me $8,500. The local shop which I know and trust said he could apply a sealant so I could drive it for a bit more and he could do it for about $2,500. What a relief.
